The Incubators are the main antagonists of the Puella Magi franchise. They are a hive-mind alien species that dedicated to prolong the the life of the universe.
Kyubey is the first Incubator to be introduced in the original series, while in later sequals and spin-offs more Incubators are introduced to the series, but Kyubey is the only one actively involved in signing contracts with Magical Girls.

Long ago, the Incubator race have found out the principle of entropy increase, which would cause the decrease of amount of usable energy in the universe. In order to prevent the heat death of universe, the Incubators began searching for a form of energy that wasn't bound by the laws of thermodynamics.
The Incubator civilization created technology that could convert the emotions of a sentient lifeform into raw energy. However, the Incubator species do not possess the capacity to experience emotion, so they studied various species throught the universe, until finally they found humans. With the size of the human population and the rate of reproduction, the amount of emotional energy produced by a single human is greater than the amount used between its birth and growth. Therefore, human souls are the energy source that could counter entropy. And the most effective of all are girls in the second stage of development who experience the greatest fluctuations between hope and despair. In the moment when the Soul Gems flare out and turn into Grief Seeds, enormous energy is created. And Incubators would collect the energy to prolong the head death of universe.
The Incubators have intervered in human civilization's development since prehistoric times. Countless girls throughout time have made contracts with Incubators, had their wishes granted and then ultimately succumbed to despair. There are some who have wrought revolutions that changed history or elevated human society to new stages of development. According to Kyubey, it is because the sacrifices of the Magical Girls that human society has developed as far as it has; If Incubators never came to earth, humans most llikely would still be living naked in caves.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica[]
One of the Incubator Kyubey, developed a system to create Magical Girls and turn them into witches to collect energy. Kyubey tricks girls into making a deal to fight witches as Magical Girls in exchange for one wish, while Kyubey steals their soul into a Soul Gem, which easily becomes tainted by negative emotions and forces them to transform into witches. By signing contract with many Magical Girls and transforming into witches, Kyubey made Mitakihara city to be populated by witches, with the witches themselves causes more deaths and bloodshed. One of the witches includes Kriemhild Gretchen, the witch Madoka Kaname turns into that's extremely powerful and can easily destroy the earth. The fact that Madoka becomes a witch motivates her best friend Homura Akemi to make a wish to travel time in order to prevent Madoka from becoming a witch, she traveled back over and over again but all failed.
As Madoka Kaname makes a wish to rewrite the universe to make none of the Magical Girls ever turned into witches in the first place and transcend into Law of Physics herself, a new system is created where that Magical Girls could rest in peace when they fall into despair instead of becoming witches, while Wraiths, a manifestations of grief replaced the witches as the enemies must fight. Kyubey tried to screw the system Madoka has created because he thought he didn't produce enough energy. This attempt is stopped by Homura Akemi, who steals Madoka's godlike powers and becomes Devil Homura. Kyubey responds by saying that manipulating human emotions is dangerous and tries to escape, but Devil Homura grabbed him, forcingly enslaved Kyubey and the rest of the Incubators to collect the curses of the new world. Since then, the entire Incubator race are sentenced of eternal damnation.
