Inspector Filip Zeman is a minor antagonist in the manga and anime series Monster. He is a corrupt Czech policeman who is working with remnants of the secret police in order to enrich himself, and was a mentor to Jan Suk.

Biography[]

He is a well-regarded police inspector at the Prague police department and is a mentor to Jan Suk, who claims he always treated him kindly. However, he is working with the underground Czech Secret Police, who seek to use Johan Liebert to regain power. Believing that an audio tape from 511 Kinderheim will help them find Johan, they become intent on finding the tape. Zeman doesn't share the group's ambitions, but wants to get rich, so he decides to get the tape and sell it to them for a lot of money.

He comes across Wolfgang Grimmer while investigating the murder of a former Kinderheim official, and is suspicious that Grimmer was given the tape. He has Grimmer kidnapped and taken to a warehouse, where Zeman and two of his accomplices brutally beat Grimmer. Zeman then tortures Grimmer further with nail clippers, leaving Grimmer in agony. He explains to Grimmer that he is a capitalist and only cares about getting rich by selling the tape on the black market. When Grimmer still won't cooperate, Zeman tortures him further and states that he's going to kill him. However, Johan interrupts the interrogation and shoots one of Zeman's men dead. Grimmer, who is nearly unconscious, goes into his "Magnificent Steiner" persona due to the stress, and brutally beats Zeman and the other man to death before escaping.

Jan Suk was at first enraged by Zeman's death and swore to find the man responsible. However, he then learned that he was aware of several corrupt cops on the force, and not only didn't do anything, but accepted bribes from the men to keep quiet. This devastated Suk who was left feeling like he couldn't trust anyone. He later met Grimmer and learned about Zeman torturing him, and admitted that he no longer cared about avenging him.
