~ Lanaryu telling the story of the Interlopers |
The Interlopers are the overarching antagonists of the 2006 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. They were a tribe of Hylian sorcerers who attempted to conquer Hyrule and steal the Triforce for themselves. After being defeated, they were banished to the Twilight Realm, where they formed their own society.
Biography[]
Past[]
Long ago, the Sacred Realm was created to house the Triforce, keeping it out of humanity's hands. However, a tribe of Hylian sorcerers practicing dark magic sought to invade the Sacred Realm in order steal the Triforce for themselves. These "Interlopers" waged war against the kingdom, killing numerous people in their attempt to break into the Sacred Realm. However, they were eventually stopped by the Spirits of Light, who stripped them of their magic and banished them into an alternate dimension known as the Twilight Realm. The powerful magic they wielded was compressed into an artifact known as the Fused Shadow, which was then fragmented and scattered across Hyrule, with one piece being banished with the Interlopers.
The magic and atmosphere of the Twilight Realm caused the Interlopers to mellow out over time, giving up on their initial goal. The Interlopers established a society and their offspring evolved over the course of several generations, becoming the Twili.
Twilight Princess[]
Centuries later, a fanatical Twili named Zant became obsessed with the Interlopers' philosophies, believing they were unjustly sealed away for mastering magic. Desiring revenge, Zant served the Twili royal family for years, believing that he would eventually be selected as the next ruler. Upon being rejected due to his lust for power, Zant grew enraged and fell into despair. However, the disembodied form of Ganondorf appeared to him, granting Zant power in exchange for opening a portal to the Light World. With Ganondorf's power, Zant usurps Midna and invades Hyrule to take revenge for the Interlopers' banishment, while Ganondorf uses the ensuing chaos to take over Hyrule undetected.
While Link collects pieces of the Fused Shadow to defeat Zant, the light spirit Lanayru tells him the story of the Interlopers, using Dark Link to symbolize them. The spirit warns Link that anyone who wields power irresponsibly will inevitably be corrupted by it, something that Zant failed to learn from the Interlopers' history. When confronted by Midna, the princess tells Zant that the reason he was rejected from the throne was because the royal family could tell that Zant was just as power-hungry as the Interlopers were, and that they did not want to repeat the same mistake as their ancestors. After Zant is killed by Midna and Ganondorf is defeated by Link, Midna shatters the portal between the Light World and the Twilight Realm to ensure that nobody like Zant or the Interlopers will invade Hyrule again.
