~ The Inventor commenting on his SUDS. |
The Inventor is a villain in the animated series Totally Spies! who serves as the main antagonist of the three-part season four finale "Totally Busted!".
He is an evil and psychotic scientist determined to rid the world of spies, believing that eliminating them will allow him to work uninterrupted. The Inventor is the creator of a dangerous substance known as SUDS (Simple-minded Users Destroy Spies), which brainwashes those it contacts into 'spy-sassins' intent on hunting down and eliminating spies. Mandy, along with her friends Dominique and Caitlin, falls under the influence of SUDS when Alex accidentally drops a canister near Mandy's hot tub, causing the substance to leak into the water while they are inside.
The Inventor was voiced by John Stocker, who also portrayed Max Exterminus and other villains in Totally Spies!, as well as Graydon Creed in X-Men: The Animated Series and the Hunter in Babar.
Biography[]
The Inventor first appears in Totally Busted! Part 1, celebrating the creation of his SUDS in his lab, only to be confronted by Sam, Clover, and Alex. He attempts to throw a canister of SUDS at the spies, but they easily dodge it. Frustrated, the Inventor rushes to a nearby table to attack the spies with his various anti-spy inventions, but they counter his attacks effortlessly. Ultimately, they ensnare him in a net, and other WOOHP agents take him into custody.
Later, in Totally Busted! Part 3, Mandy and her friends, who have fallen victim to the effects of SUDS and become spy-sassins, learn about the Inventor and his creation from Sam, Clover, and Alex after capturing them. The spy-sassins break into WOOHP to release the Inventor and bring him to his lab. Mandy loads SUDS canisters into a small propeller plane, and she and the Inventor conspire to deploy SUDS worldwide, aiming to create an indestructible army of spy-sassins to eliminate all spies. However, Mandy criticizes the Inventor's outrageous hairstyle, insisting he must shave or dye it, much to his annoyance.
Sam, Clover, and Alex arrive with their mothers—Gabriella, Stella, and Carmen—to confront the Inventor and the spy-sassins. The Inventor arms Mandy and her friends with dangerous weapons and robotic spiders to attack the spies. As the mothers rush to help, the Inventor traps them in a force field created by his Spy-Strictor to keep the odds even. When the mothers demand to be released, the Inventor attempts to flirt with Carmen, asking if she'd like to have dinner with him afterward. Disgusted, Carmen refuses, stating that with his hair, she wouldn’t be caught with him in public or private. The Inventor, outraged by the constant criticism of his hairstyle, claims it is essential for his credibility as a mad scientist.
As Mandy and her friends corner Sam, Clover, and Alex, the mothers manage to destroy the force field and defeat Dominique and Caitlin. However, Mandy escapes, leading the Inventor to tell Carmen that if she won't date him, he might as well put her out of commission. Carmen swiftly knocks him out, quipping, "In your dreams, pal!" After Mandy's attempt to escape with the plane carrying the SUDS is thwarted, more WOOHP agents arrive to re-imprison the Inventor. Jerry explains that the remaining SUDS has been destroyed and that he has administered the spy-sassin antidote to Mandy and her friends, restoring them to their original personalities with no memory of their time under the SUDS influence.
Personality[]
The Inventor is portrayed as a stereotypical mad scientist, exhibiting insanity and a complete awareness of his evil nature. He revels in his villainy, proudly describing his inventions as both evil and sinister. The SUDS substance he created causes those brainwashed by it to embrace their villainous identities, proudly calling themselves villains.
He harbors a deep loathing for spies, viewing them as constant interruptions to his work. The Inventor seeks to eliminate anyone with the "spy gene," which the SUDS exposes in its victims, driving them to target anyone associated with espionage—regardless of whether they are active spies or not.
Additionally, the Inventor is sensitive about negative comments regarding his outrageous hairstyle, insisting that it is essential for his credibility as a mad scientist.
His apparent feelings of affection towards Carmen appear to be more obsessive than genuine, as he immediately threatens to kill her after she rejects his advances.
