Villain Overview

Out of a thousand young men on that ship, I was the only survivor. They told my family she was sunk in battle, but I know what I saw; it had no conscience, no reasoning, just destroy.
~ Bill Randa regarding the Ion Dragon.

The Ion Dragon is the main antagonist of the Apple+ television prequel series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the second television series of the MonsterVerse franchise. It is a draconic Titan which was discovered in the Philippines in 1952, where it was the culprit of the USS Lawton's destruction.

Appearance[]

The Ion Dragon is a large draconic Titan that resembles a quadrupedal wyvern with piscine features. It has a wide, fish-like head with two bovine-like horns behind its eyes, two hooked growths facing downwards on its top lip and exposed razor-sharp teeth that point straight. Its body is covered in shiny black scales and fish-like gills adorn its neck. It has two, large, dark red wings that resemble the fins of a flying fish and four-fingered hands that are positioned at the end of the arm part of the wing. It displays a skinny, muscular physique and its hindlimbs are much shorter and stubbier than its forelimbs. The end of its tail is covered by forward-facing needle-like spines, terminating in a four-pronged pincer-like claw. Its blood is also teal-colored.

Personality[]

Despite being an extremely territorial and predatory creature, the Ion Dragon is depicted as nothing more than a malevolent, sadistic, ruthless, cunning, cold-hearted, bloodthirsty, dangerous and homicidal monster in nature, being hostilely aggressive towards anything that approaches its territory or objects that it has claimed for its own. This aggression is especially prevalent in the Ion Dragon's interactions with humans, having sunk the USS Lawton and killing its crew and later attacking Lee Shaw, Keiko and Bill Randa while they were investigating the remains of the ship. A decade after this, the creature attacked a Monarch reconnaissance team that tailed it, even eating one of the operatives. By 2015, the Ion Dragon's territorial aggression extended to other Titans as well as it attacked Godzilla completely unprovoked.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about the Ion Dragon's origins, though in ancient times, its presence in the Philippines and its ability to discharge radioactive ions in the air that form aurora-like patterns inspired myths among the local Filipino tribes about a dragon that carves a path of fire across the sky. In 1943, the creature attacked a ship known as the USS Lawton 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor and sank it in less than 3 minutes before carrying it to the Philippines. Luckily, Monarch agent William Randa was the sole survivor of the attack in the aftermath.

In 1952, Dr. Keiko Miura followed a radiation trail to the Philippines, escorted by Lieutenant Lee Shaw. There, they meet Randa, who explains to them of the dragon and his efforts to track it. Skeptical, Shaw left the two behind. Following myths that laid out the dragon's migration path and its correlation to Miura's radiation data, the duo eventually find the USS Lawton, now the Ion Dragon's territory. Miura and Randa explored inside the ship, but decided to turn back upon finding Randa's preserved crewmates and fresh nacre.

The Ion Dragon attacked shortly thereafter, smashing through the ship and trapping Bill under debris. Shaw returned just in time to help Randa free and all three escaped through a hole in the wall just before the ship toppled over. The Ion Dragon then erupts through the Lawton and pursues the group to the edge of the clearing where the ship rested, only to give up once they reached the forest. Shaw, Randa, and Miura then watched as the Ion Dragon flew and perched atop the ship, letting out a mighty screeching roar.

In 1962, Monarch organized an expedition into Axis Mundi, named Operation Hourglass, using an entrance located in the U.S. state of Kansas. In order to stabilize the entrance, a Gamma Ray Simulator was set up to lure a Titan. The simulator successfully attracted the Ion Dragon's attention as it moved to pass through the portal until the simulator was turned off. This caused the Titan to lose interest and return to Axis Mundi, followed by a team which included Lee. The team was subsequently trapped in Axis Mundi as the portal imploded for unknown reasons. As they attempted to get an evacuation from the surface, the Ion Dragon attacked, eating at least one member of the group before flying through the portal.

Kong: Skull Island[]

In 1973, when confronted and interrogated by Preston Packard after he and his soldiers were attacked by Kong, Randa recalled how he was the only sole survivor of the Lawton after it was attacked by the Ion Dragon in 1943. He described the monster as having "no conscience, no reasoning, just destroy."

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters[]

In 2015, Shaw, Cate Randa, May Olowe-Hewitt and Keiko attempt to escape Axis Mundi using the pod from Operation Hourglass and its Gamma Ray Simulator to lure a Titan from the surface through a portal to stabilize it. Upon the Simulator's activation, it instead lured the nearby Ion Dragon, who attempted to grab the Simulator. Another Titan was attracted by the Simulator and began moving through the portal, but one of the Ion Dragon's flybys disconnected the pod from the Gamma Ray Simulator, which caused the approaching Titan to lose interest.

Shaw left the pod and reconnected the simulator as the Ion Dragon prepares to devour him and the group, but is distracted by the arrival of Godzilla, whom Shaw had lured to their location in hopes of tailing him out back to the surface. The Ion Dragon takes flight and positions itself behind Godzilla before going in for the attack, leading to a fierce fight between the two Titans. During the battle, the Ion Dragon seizes Godzilla's head within its thagomizers as it begins biting into his thick neck, but Godzilla tears off a thagomizer and sends the beast hurling into a mountain. As the two viciously clash again, the Ion Dragon expels its nacre from its throat in an effort to blind Godzilla, who body slams the flying Titan and burns it with his atomic breath. Eventually, Godzilla firmly seizes the Ion Dragon and tears off one of its wings before hurling its dismembered body into the portal, leaving the creature's fate unknown.

    • Flight: The Ion Dragon is able to use its large wings to fly through the air at high speeds and at high altitudes. It is capable of flight even while traversing through Axis Mundi rifts, using the current of the vortexes to glide at high speed. The Ion Dragon used its advantage of flight to stay out of Godzilla's reach during their fight.
    • Nacre Production: The Ion Dragon can spray viscous nacre from its mouth, which is capable of trapping and preserving smaller organisms. The creature used this ability to surprise Godzilla, causing him to briefly stop charging his atomic breath.
    • Amphibiousness: To be added
    • Ion Emission: As it flies, the Ion Dragon is capable of discharging radioactive ions into the air, which form aurora-like patterns in the sky.

  • Prehensile Tail: The Ion Dragon displays a long powerful tail with thagomizers on it as it could use it as a formidable weapon against its opponents, allowing the creature to briefly restrain Godzilla's head with it as it bites into the Titan's throat.
  • Master Swimmer: To be added

Trivia[]

  • The Ion Dragon's vocal effects before being slammed into the ground by Godzilla's atomic breath is taken from sound effects of the Mighty Eagle from Angry Birds.
