Background[]

Military Service[]
While training in gas fitting, Ira was drafted into the United States Marine Corps during the height of World War II, serving in the Sixth Marines alongside Cole Phelps, Jack Kelso and Courtney Sheldon. He was placed as the platoon's flamethrower due to his height, strength and skills in mechanics. In the Okinawa campaign, Phelps ordered Ira to torch a supposed Japanese hideout, which was actually a makeshift hospital for civilians. Remorseful and guilt-ridden, Hogeboom suffered a breakdown and attempted to Cole, but was unable to due before Sheldon wounded Phelps.
L.A. Noire[]
Following the incident, Ira was removed for the battle fatigue as the war ended with Allied victory, and returned to his father's home at the rancho rincon. Still haunted by his actions in Okinawa, Sheldon asked his mentor Doctor Harlan J. Fontaine to speak with Ira, diagnosing him as a paranoid schizophrenic. While receiving therapy from Fontaine with morphine, he managed to get a job as a pest exterminator for the Westlake Pest Control Agency. However, Dr. Fontaine started to manipulate Hogeboom to do his bidding for the Suburban Redevelopment Fund, tasking him to burn down houses who were holding out on selling out. Ira continued his services until he killed the Sawyer family since they stayed home due to their child falling ill, causing Hogeboom's fall into insanity.
After burning down another house that held the Morelli family, Ira suffered a breakdown and started to rationalize the murders as freeing them and that he was fighting for God. He soon started to create origami cranes in hopes to receive the free wish according to the legend, and confronted Dr. Fontaine by strangling him to death before he could kill his patient Elsa Litchmann. Hogeboom then kidnapped Elsa and brought her to Los Angeles' tunnels, and proceeded to fend off Leland Monroe's henchman in their attempt to silence Elisa's knowledge of their scheme.
