~ Irish |
Irish is a major character of the 2010 western action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption.
He is a drunkard who is meant to help John Marston on finding the gatling gun and its parts.
He was voiced by Kåius Härrisøn
History[]
Background[]
Irish grew up poor and hungry and was raised as a Catholic by his parents, who told him to never trust a Welshman, and his father would have gotten his throat slit by one soon, possibly. Irish then emigrated to the United States when he was just fourteen years old after getting caught in bed with his own brother's wife. When he was on a boat ride to America, he then met two immigrants, Welsh and French, and proceeded to become friends with them, becoming "as thick as thieves," in Irish's words. He also alleges to murdering at least one man who goes by the name "Twinkle-Toe Dave."
Events of Red Dead Redemption[]
New Austin[]
John Marston meets him somewhere in the town of Armadillo while he was getting his head dunked in a horse trough filled with water by Welsh and French, as he was accused of betraying them by stealing and selling their horses and weapons. After John kills the two men and saves Irish, he is asked if he can help find a Gatling gun. He then says that the location of the Gatling gun is at a cabin near Lake Don Julio; he even calms John, saying that they'll get there soon enough.
After that Gatling gun wasn't there, he then gets tracked down by John while Irish was drunk, lying down, and talking to himself. He then gets startled by John even forgetting him and tries to defend himself. He then gets conscious and remembers John, saying he found a real one. He then gets threatened by John that if he doesn't find him his machine gun, then he'd wish he was killed by Welsh and French instead. Irish blames the alcohol for deceiving him and actually proceeds to guide John to the gun's location. They then arrived near a mine in Gaptooth Breach. Irish then orders John to infiltrate the mine and find the Gatling gun while he will just station himself at the lift. After John finally steals the machine gun, Irish then helps him and lifts the minecart with the gun using ropes. Irish then leaves and stays at the bottom of the hill until John arrives at his location and then delivers it using a shotgun.
Irish is then tracked down again by John, and this time, the gun doesn't work. Irish is drunk again and tries to rob two nuns in an alleyway at Thieves' Landing until John confronts him and smacks his head with his revolver and then gets choked before getting thrown to the ground. Irish gets conscious again and leads John to Shaky's place, where the parts of the Gatling gun are located. While realizing the gate is closed, he and John go towards the back only to hear Shaky getting tortured. He then orders John to rescue Shaky by getting in. After John finally retrieves the gun parts and ammo, Irish arrives and helps Shaky and John put the parts at the back of the wagon. Irish then rides the wagon with John and gets chased by more bandits and gangsters until none are left and arrives at the MacFarlane's Ranch.
Before attacking Fort Mercer, Irish, Nigel West Dickens, Marshal Johnson, and his deputies arrive and meet John at a hill. Irish is seen getting pulled aside by Leigh Johnson and the unnamed deputy, which causes him to almost trip. During the assault, he is nowhere to be seen again, and after the fight at Fort Mercer is over, he arrives late, missing the action as always.
John meets Irish with Nigel West Dickens at a small port on Brittlebrush Trawl. He then prepares a raft for him and John while Nigel West Dickens leaves. While crossing, they were met with bounty hunters who were shooting at them, forcing Irish to cut the rope and land further downstream while John was fighting more bounty hunters. After they reach the shore, Irish suggests John visit Chuparosa to find an American he knew and rides off with his horse, never to be encountered again.
Epilogue[]
During the events of 1914, a Blackwater ledger states that an Irishman with an unknown name died of an accidental discharge of a gun in an outhouse in Thieves' Landing, suggesting that this was Irish.
Personality[]
Irish is a problematic alcoholic who frequently exaggerates and recounts stories about which he rarely recalls the specifics. When John Marston works with him, he frequently completes the tasks while Irish is absent, which further solidifies his image as a coward and a lazy alcoholic. Because of his drunkenness, he also frequently caused problems for those around him. He was nearly drowned and killed by two of his former countrymen, French and Welsh, even begging that it wasn't him who stole the horses and guns and suggesting it was French who did it, and if John Marston hadn't intervened, he would have suffered severe injuries or died. John often finds him sitting against a wall and lying down, partially sleeping from the effects of the drink.
