| ~ Iron Warriors battlecry. |
The Iron Warriors are major antagonists in Warhammer 40k, originally serving the Imperium as the IVth Legion before their fall to the Ruinous Powers. Lead by their Primarch Perturabo, the Iron Warriors were the siege specialists among the Space Marine Legions, able to break any defensive hold and notorious for their brutal yet extremely effective tactics with siege weapons. Constantly sent to the most dangerous and near suicide missions, they would begin harboring a growing resentment towards The Emperor, as they never failed to bring him a victory and their rewards for such was even more hazardous campaigns. While The Emperor saw this as merit to their unquestionable prowess, even as the other Primarchs and their Legions began holding the Iron Warriors in negative view.
This would ultimately lead to Perturabo and his Legion abandoning an Imperium they believe took advantage of and forsook them, and sided with Horus and the Heretic Legions, being the primary reason the Heresy got as far as it did. They and Perturabo are the archenemies of Rogal Dorn and his Imperial Fists.
Attributes[]
The Iron Warriors are masters of the siege. Unmatched in their ability to break through any defense, they were able to do so via their extremely powerful siege weaponry and or their genius tactics. Similar to the Night Lords in a certain regard, some of the Iron Warriors attacks could be seen as a shock tactic, but instead of the unfathomable atrocities the VIIIth Legion would commit, they would shock their enemies to their core by the sheer scale and destructiveness of their tactics, often leaving behind nothing but smoldering ruins and had a penchant for extreme collateral damage.
The Iron Warriors were also fierce believers in the power of metal and machines. They constantly sought to improve and master both themselves and their crafts, slowly converting more and more of their bodies with cybernetic augmentations that allowed them to achieve things the flesh could not. Engineering geniuses, they, same as their beloved Primarch, were vehemently against the corruption of Chaos and the Chaos Gods despite the fact they supposedly worshiped Chaos Undivided. So dedicated to keeping themselves clean of daemonic corruption they were that should any adverse mutations take hold on their bodies due to the influence of The Warp, they would immediately surgically remove it, and replace and fix any damage done with further cybernetics.
Instead of true religious devotion like many of their cousin legions, the Iron Warriors at large are best described as agnostic. They fight alongside Chaos in a similar manner to the Black Legion, making the largest use of Daemon Engines among the Traitor Legions.
The Iron Warriors once lived on Olympia, Perturabo's homeworld, until its citizens rebelled against the Imperium. Allowing their resentment of their role in the Great Crusade to explode, they slaughtered much of the planet's population and enslaved the survivors. Any dissidenters within the Legion itself met the same fate. After the Heresy, the Iron Warriors settled on the Daemon World of Medrengard in the Eye of Terror. It is described as a Fortress World of towering black spires and colossal slave-labor factories, with a sky of smog and a black sun being the only source of light.
