Iruka Yumiya is a major character in the manga series Astral Buddy, a spin-off of A Certain Scientific Railgun.
She is a Level 4 student of Tokiwadai Middle School and the captain of its archery club. She's also the younger sister of Rakko Yumiya, and like her, one of the former test subjects of Ideal, where she developed a profound admiration towards Junko Hokaze and a powerful desire to become a Level 5.
Appearance[]
Iruka is a young girl with long wavy hair, which she ties with a ribbon at the back. The fringes of her hair cover the right side of her face so she can hide her scar and right eye which contains a prism that she uses with her ability. She also wears a Kanzashi hairpin.
Iruka is typically seen wearing the standard Tokiwadai uniform, having long stockings.
Personality[]
Iruka Yumiya is a stereotypical ojousama, having a serious, refined and amicable personality and is quite approachable to others. As shown in her youth, Iruka was shown to be more outgoing than her older sister Rakko, who she usually acted as a caretaker towards, despite being the younger sister. However, she can be very excessive in her affection and has a habit of subconsciously kissing others.
However, Iruka possesses a darker side to herself. She is shown to be rather cunning and deceptive, as she was able to successfully plan and carry out the abduction of Misaki Shokuhou. While she prefers to use trickery and deceit to defeat an opponent, Iruka is quite willing to engage in a battle herself if she needs to. Moreover, Iruka displays great admiration towards Junko Hokaze and desires to surpass her. She's also disappointed in Junko due to her subconsciously holding back her full potential. She desires to fight and defeat Junko at full power and tries to convince her not to hold back. She is willing to sacrifice her own life to achieve this goal. Iruka's obsession with Junko can be interpreted as romantic love. She's also a fan of Gekota due to Junko's influence.
Furthermore, Iruka has a genuine friendship with Arei Houjou, even though it's revealed that the latter was using her lure out Junko and gather data on her. Eventually, Iruka begins showing a more lighthearted side to herself after reconciling with Junko, usually blushing whenever Junko gives her attention. She also develops a rivalry with Misaki and Gunha Sogiita over Junko's affections, though the latter is one-sided.
Biography[]
Iruka and her older sister Rakko were test subjects for Clone Dolly, an expriement with the intention of creating Level 5s. She and Rakko visted the Third Laboratory: Ideal, they met Ayu Mitsuari and later Junko Hokaze. When Iruka tried to approach her, Junko warned her not to get close as she claims to be dangerous.

Wave Conductor: Iruka's Level 4 esper power which allows her to freely manipulate sound, light, or anything with the properties of a wave. She can amplify them and focus them to achieve a variety of effects. Apparently, she has an easier time using her power when she's touching the source of the waves.
- Sound: Iruka can use sound in various ways. For example, by twanging her bowstring during an archery competition she messed up with the hearing of her competitor, causing them to miss. She can also use a whistle to create a sound blast.
Iruka turning a flashlight into sword
- Light: Iruka uses her power to turn simple things like laser pointers and flashlights into weapons. Laser pointers are used as a ranged weapon to shoot beams of amplified light and burn through the target, while she uses a modified military flashlight as a sword that can easily cut through a steel beam. However, she cannot use her laser pointers and flashlight sword at the same time and must switch from one to the other. Because her powers cause the battery to run out faster than normal she carries several laser pointers and battery backups.
- Flash: Iruka can create a bright strong flash of light out of her palm to send the direct stimulus into the brain of a target, causing an abnormality on their brain's electric signals and making them to pass out, bypassing individual sensitivity to photo-sensitive epilepsy, though the effectiveness varies from person to person and can be resisted if the target can control their own electric signals.
