Villain Overview

I still respect life. Thus I am saving you from the misery that is agony.
~ Isao Shirabi's view of life (in the manga).

Isao Shirabi (known as the King of Spades) is one of the main antagonists of the Netflix show and manga series Alice in Borderland. He is a mercenary who became a game master in the Borderlands. He first appears at the beginning of the Second Stage of the series and begins a murder spree with an anti-tank rifle.

In the manga, it is revealed that after he arrived to the Borderlands, he became close friends with Keiichi Kuzuryu, Mira Kano and Ginji Kyuma, with them eventually deciding to become citizens to run the games and spend more time together.

He is portrayed by Ayumi Tanida. In the English dub, he is voiced by Richard M. Dumont.

Personality[]

Isao Shirabi is an individual with a distinctively cold and nihilistic demeanor, harboring a belief that the essence of existence is intertwined with the inherent suffering it entails. In his desolate worldview, he firmly asserts that true deliverance can only be attained through the ultimate liberation found in death. This unique perspective has been largely shaped by the haunting presence of post-traumatic stress disorder, which he acquired as a result of his active participation in numerous battles and the heart-wrenching sight of witnessing his dear comrade, Apache, succumb to the perils of war.

Biography[]

Background[]

In the TV series, the character of the King of Spades remains shrouded in mystery, with little information divulged. However, in the manga version, a deeper insight is provided, unveiling the intriguing backstory of Isao Shirabi, who was employed as a Mercenary alongside his trusted companion Apache. This additional revelation adds a layer of complexity to the character, offering a more comprehensive understanding of his past and potentially influencing their perception of him.

During their conversation, Apache brings up the fact that his owner has expressed a desire to utilize his skills for a specific task, tempting him with the enticing offer of one million swiss francs. However, Isao, being well-informed and perceptive, promptly declines this proposition. It is not because Isao undervalues the worth of the generous sum being offered, but rather because he possesses a profound understanding of the current state of affairs. Isao recognizes that Apache's side in the ongoing conflict is gradually losing ground, and if they fail to emerge victorious, the consequences could be dire. The potential outcome of being discarded or even facing a lethal fate is a reality that Isao cannot overlook, prompting him to judiciously reject the alluring offer.

Isao's decision to accept the jobs turns out to be justified as he and Apache find themselves in a perilous situation on the battlefield, where they are unexpectedly ambushed and targeted with gunfire. Fortunately, they manage to escape the hail of bullets, but unfortunately, Apache sustains severe wounds and injuries as a result.

Isao is approached by Apache, who advises him that he has fulfilled his duties and it is time for him to abandon Apache, allowing him to succumb to his injuries while Isao can continue on and survive. Following a conversation between the two, Apache implores Isao to grant him a final favor. Apache requests that Isao be the one to end his life, which leaves Isao astounded. However, Apache assures Isao that by fulfilling this request, he will be relieving him of his agony.

Isao reluctantly consented to fulfilling the favor despite his inner turmoil. However, before carrying out the act of taking Apache's life, Isao felt compelled to seek clarification from Apache himself. With a tremor in his voice, he asked Apache if this cruel act would somehow bring salvation. To Isao's surprise, Apache responded with an unwavering affirmation, confirming that this was indeed his path to redemption. Overwhelmed by conflicting emotions, Isao carried out the deed, his hands stained with both guilt and a sense of duty. Little did he know that this haunting moment would forever be etched into the very fabric of his existence, an indelible mark that would relentlessly haunt him till the end of his days.
