Biography[]
Ishara Yar was the younger sister of one-time Enterprise security chief Tasha Yar and a resident of Turkana IV, a former Federation colony. When the colony's government fell, power fell to the criminal cadres, who fought wars between themselves for territories and supplies. Ishara's parents were killed during the fighting. Tasha blamed the cadres for their deaths but, once she was old enough, Ishara joined to Coalition, one of the two most powerful cadres. When Tasha left the planet to join Starfleet, she asked Ishara to come with her but Ishara refused, considering Tasha a coward for abandoning their world.
Fifteen years later, the Coalition came into contact with crewmembers of the Enterprise, the ship Tasha had served on prior to her death. The Enterprise was searching for two survivors of a destroyed ship who had been taken hostage by the Coalition's enemies, the Alliance. Coalition leader Hayne quickly learned of Ishara's connection with the ship and proposed he and the Enterprise crew work together to free the hostages, assigning Ishara to the Enterprise as a liaison. However, Ishara's real assignment was to use the Enterprise to help the Coalition defeat the Alliance.
Ishara explained the situation on the surface to the Enterprise crew and submitted to a DNA test to confirm her identity. Lieutenant Commander LaForge proposed a plan to activate the locator on the missing crew's escape pod in order to find their location. Ishara provided them with the location of the escape pod and also offered to act as a distraction for the Enterprise away team. Like every member of the cadre, she had been fitted with a proximity chip. If she was in the Alliance base, the chip would set off alarms to draw their attention. The crew agreed, beaming her in ahead of the away team. Under attack from Alliance personnel, she was shot and wounded but rescued by Commander Riker and taken back to the Enterprise.
As plans continued to be made, Ishara spent time with the crew, notably Lieutenant Commander Data, and claimed to be impressed by the Enterprise and to want to leave Turkana IV and join Starfleet as her sister had done. When the Alliance area where the hostages were being held was identified, Ishara said she could guide them through it but would need to have her proximity chip removed so as not to set off the alarms. The crew agreed and removed it for her.
Ishara beamed down with an away team and led them to the hostages, but then slipped away to carry out her main objective: Setting the Alliance's generator to overload, which would bring down their defences and allow the Coalition to attack and slaughter them. Data tracked her down and told her the Federation could not allow deaths to occur as a result of their actions, also warning her they would both die when the generator exploded. Ishara told him she was willing to die and tried to tell him to leave. When he refused, she fired on him with a phaser set to kill. Riker's arrival distracted her, allowing Data to stun her and then stabilise the reactor.
Ishara was taken back to the Enterprise as a prisoner but Captain Picard, seemingly recognising they had no jurisdiction to punish her for crimes committed on the planet, agreed to return her to Hayne and told Data to escort her to the transporter room. As he did so, Ishara told him that not everything she said was a lie and she did consider him a friend. Data didn't respond to the sentiment, ordering her beamed back down to the planet.
