~ Isildur. |
Isildur is one of the nine Nazgûl and major antagonist in the video game Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Although he is a character from the books and movies, he is recast as a fallen hero, who was one of the nine kings of men corrupted by one of Sauron's rings and turned into one of the undead Nazgûl.
He is also the true reason why Talion became the newest Nazgûl, wearing his ring, before the events of Lord of the Rings film trilogy that Shelob gave him the last future vision.
He was voiced by Nolan North, who also voiced Zog the Eternal in the same game, The Black Hand of Sauron in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Dr. Edward Richtofen in Call of Duty zombies, Martin Walker in Spec Ops: The Line, David in The Last of Us, Modi in God of War, The Penguin in Batman Arkhamverse, and many others.
History[]
Origins[]
Before becoming a Nazgûl, Isildur was the oldest son of Elendil and brother to Anárion and is the direct ancestor of Aragorn, who would return 3,000 years after Isildur died to reclaim the throne of Gondor during the events of The Lord of the Rings. As the High King of Gondor and Arnor during his lifetime, Isildur and his brother Anárion jointly ruled Gondor in the South, while their father dwelled in the North.
During the War of the Last Alliance, Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand after Sauron killed Isildur's father, Elendil in battle, but he refused to destroy it as the ring seduced and corrupted him. In the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, Isildur was killed by Orcs during the chase, and the Ring left his finger, and was lost and later owned by a creature known as Gollum. After his death, the Orcs brought Isildur's body to the diminished and vengeful Sauron, who put a Ring on his finger, reviving him as one of his servants and eventually turning him into a ringwraith.
As a Nazgûl[]
As one of the nine Nazgûl, Isildur was forced to serve the Dark Lord for all time. He battles against Talion and Eltariel, and is aided by Gondorian Wights that fell at Minas Ithil. During the final battle toward Barad-dûr, Isildur appears and faces Talion and Celebrimbor once again, but is defeated. After the vision, Celebrimbor breaks Sauron's hold to dominate Isildur, but Talion, ignoring Celebrimbor's warning, frees him so he can finally have peace in death. After Celebrimbor betrays and abandons Talion to die, the ranger claims the Ring of Power that Isildur dropped from his fingers and then takes his place as the newest Nazgûl after holding back Sauron's forces for decades. Talion is eventually freed from Isildur's ring upon the destruction of the One Ring, and goes to the afterlife to reunite with his family.

Trivia[]
- Despite his original version, Isildur has the same role for stealing the One Ring from Sauron and was later killed in a chase, resulting in losing the One Ring. He is brought back to life by Sauron giving him a Ring of Power to make him one of his nine servants. However, Talion freed Isildur to find peace in death and later put on the ring to take Isildur's place as the newest Nazgûl, revealing one of the visions about the future that Shelob gave him. Also, Isildur is the only fallen king to be free by Talion from Sauron's domain after his ring slipped off from his fingers.
