We simply came… before.
~ Minerva, a representative of the Isu (aka the First Civilization and Those Who Came Before).

The Isu, also known as The First Civilization and Those Who Came Before, classified as Homo Saipens Divinus or the Precursors, were an ancient and advanced species of humanoid beings on Earth who created the Pieces of Eden, as well as the human race itself in the Assassin's Creed video game series. Exactly who they were, where they came from and when they disappeared is largely unknown.

In Assassin's Creed III, one of their members, Juno is the primary antagonist to Desmond Miles. She was imprisoned in the Grand Temple by Minerva and Jupiter for her crimes against her own kind and humanity.

Ancient Origins

The First Civilization are a humanoid species which are native to Earth and are probably the products of thousands of years of evolution, though their exact origins and culture is unclear.

Creating Humanity

With early humans unable to comprehend the First Civilization for what they truly were, they were looked upon as gods.

After a catastrophe that destroyed a majority of both populations, those who came before and humans worked together to rebuild. Those who came before knew there would be another great catastrophe and so worked to preserve the human race. Although they started as an adversarial race they eventually saw the goodness of humans.

Modern Times - The Phoenix Project

The Templars, under the guise of Abstergo Industries, have begun a secretive project which aims to genetically engineer the Isu back into existence. They have been collecting samples of all kinds of Isu DNA from various individuals as well as Sages, the reincarnations of an Isu named Aita.

The Phoenix Project also seeks to study the Pieces of Eden, so as to replicate their designs, powers and workings as well as create better ones.

Powers and Abilities

A hundred years I might speak and still you would not know us. You with five senses. Us with six. The one we kept from you. To be safe. Now, you can never know. Only try. Grasp. You can SEE. SMELL. TASTE. TOUCH. HEAR. Knowledge has been blocked away. After, when the world became undone, we tried to pass it through the blood. Tried to join you with us. You see the blue shimmer. You hear the words. But you do not know.

~ Juno describing the Isu's abilities.

The Isu are a precursor humanoid race of highly advanced beings, who were naturally superhumanly smart, incomprehensibly advanced and extremely long lived. They were responsible for the creation the human race, crafting them in their image. Their existence had also played a part in the founding of various organized religions as well as occult and supernatural folklore. Some of their known natural abilities include;

  • Precognitive Sense: The Isu had a precognitive sixth sense, which has been displayed several times. Minerva once used it to talk to Desmond in the future, from the Apple of Eden in Ezio's hands. This trait has also been inherited by some Isu / Human hybrids in today's world.
  • Triple-Helix DNA: They have a Triple-Helix DNA, giving them a very vast biological advantage over human beings. People with high percentages of the Triple Helix DNA were able to contact and develop a telepathic link with Consus, an Isu entity. Those with Isu DNA were also granted better control and usage of the Pieces of Eden. They can also resist the telepathic abilities of the Apples of Eden.
  • Superhuman Intelligence: Their level of intelligence was so advanced that they were able to create many of their advanced technological equipment, which has since surpassed their time and into the human's world.
  • Superhuman Abilities: The Isu entities display increased levels of physical might, strength, reflexes, resilience and stamina. These supernatural attributes are further enhanced through technology integrated into their clothing and weapons.
  • Superhuman Longevity: Though not immortal, these beings had an extremely long lifespan. It has been stated that Minerva and Jupiter walked the earth for centuries if not more, much longer after humanity managed to reconstitute some of it's civilization after the Toba Catastrophe.
  • Telepathic Immunity: The Isu's lack the neurotransmitters bred within human DNA which interfaced with the Pieces of Eden so as to psionically control them, thus the Isu's are immune to the telepathic properties of the Pieces of Eden, but are still vulnerable to the Pieces of Eden's other physical effects.
  • Eden-Based Technopathy: Just as Juno has shown, the Isu can psionically command technology and structure built by them with merely a thought. They can even do so with the Pieces of Eden.

Special Cases

During the events of the Judgment of Atlantis, or Eivor reliving Odin's memories, more specialized cases of the Isu's powers were displayed through the use of their superior abilities and advanced equipment.

  • Reincarnations: Through the study of Consus' consciousness replication innovations by Hyrrokin (Juno), the Capitoline Triad developed an innovation called the "Mead". This innovation allows the Isu who use it in tandem with the Yggdrasil, to be reborn over the ages as humans. For example, the Isu, specifically from the Æsir faction can reincarnate as human beings repeatedly due to the Yggdrasil supercomputer. Even Aita reincarnates as humans over the eons.
  • Consciousness Replication: Through the original efforts of Consus and the refined methods of Juno, the Isu had developed the method to replicate one's consciousness. Some of the Isu had managed to create an artificial replica of their consciousness in order to live forever as immaterial beings. They can even be summoned and manifest as a holographic spirit from existing Pieces of Eden. Examples of these include Jötnar Isu like Aletheia and Juno as well as the Æsir Isu trusted by Odin. It has been stated many times that the Jötnar faction of the Isu who were responsible for creating this method, as well as the Isu from Svartálfaheimr and Æsir, refer to it as "Hugr Magic".
  • Spatial Manipulation: The Rulers of Elysium (Persephone), Underworld (Hades) and Atlantis (Poseidon) had received a number of bio-augmentations which allow them the power of spatial manipulation. Persephone and Poseidon had both uses this to physically restrain their targets whereas Hades and Hermes Trismegistus had both shown the power to levitate and move at superhuman speeds. Poseidon even used this power to open a Portal into the Underworld so as to transport the mishtios and himself out of the Underworld.
  • Psychological Programming: Persephone used her powers to re-program Hekate's neural impulses, therefore rendering Hekate incapable telling any lies at all.
  • Illusion Manipulation: The Jötnar faction of Isu were capable of generating physical illusions which allowed them to take on an appearance of an animal in order to scout for enemies. They also integrated illusionary technologies throughout their realm, allowing them to mask their residences and secret lairs with physical illusions.
  • Parachronal Cognition: A technique to see into alternate timelines and accurately control and predict future outcomes through an unknown Isu innovation called the Calculations. The Calculations are also known as "Seiðr" by the Jötnar faction of the Isu. The Nornir faction of Isu used the calculations to perform parachronal cognition in order to keep the Æsir leader Odin informed of potentially influential changes coming ahead.
  • Biological Immortality: Through the use of technologies like the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus, the Isu can a live far beyond their already immensely long natural lifespans. However, losing physical contact with such technologies causes them to age to death should they be living beyond their natural lifespans. Even the Isu Odin once stated to the Nornir that he considered himself eternal.
  • Regenerative Abilities: Through the use of their medical technologies like the Shrouds of Eden and Staff of Hermes Trismegistus, the Isu can instantaneously regenerate from any from of physical damages.
  • Sentient Life Creation: Through the efforts of Yaldabaoth (the Father of Understanding), Saklas (the Mother of Wisdom), and Samael (the Sacred Voice), the Isu developed the scientific expertise to create the human species. They have also created more types of hominids like the Neanderthals, which according to Abstergo researchers, were built for military use. With Sinmara, she mass produced Muspel soldiers at Afalvat Mylna, a Muspel stronghold in Svartálfaheimr.
  • Power Absorption: Through the use of the Hugr-Rip, Odin could absorb the powers of fallen Jötnar, Muspels and Ravens for his own temporary use.
  • Elemental Manipulation: Through unexplained mechanisms and Pieces of Eden, the Isu were capable of manipulating elemental forces like fire, frost and electricity.
    • Energy Manipulation: The Isu had shown the power of energy manipulation. Hades used it to conjure up offensive abilities during combat, Poseidon conjured balls of energy to be used against Juno and Aita, and Hermes Trismegistus could project a beam of energy into their hands.
    • Frigid Manipulation: Through unexplained means, the Isu Suttungr was able to generate freezing blasts of cold and ice when he fought Odin. He was even able to form ice walls around them. With the use of the Hugr-Rip, Odin could absorb the frigid powers of a fallen Jötunn and use it temporarily, allowing him to sue cryokinetic attacks against his enemies. This power is incredibly useful against the Muspel legions Odin battles.
    • Infernal Manipulation: Surtr and his Muspel legions can manipulate heat, fire and volcanic lava as weapons during conquest. Surtr can even use the lava to teleport short distances and conjure Surtr's Fury, suicidal Muspels which blow up when they come close to their targets. With the powers of a Muspel, Odin can generate infernal abilities and survive the extreme temperatures and environments Muspels are accustomed to.
    • Electricity Generation: During battle, Isu can use Pieces of Eden like the Swords of Eden, Spears of Eden or the Hammers of Eden to generate electrical blasts. Odin could even generate electrical blasts do decimate the legions of Jötnar and Muspels he fought in Svartálfaheimr.
  • Draugr Creation: Through the Powers of the Hugr-Rip, Odin can temporarily revive fallen foes as his undead allies for a short time.

      • To absorb, contain and preserve any user's consciousness within itself, via its upload system or its branches.
      • Run realistic simulations as well as run the calculations effectively.
      • Reincarnate the consciousnesses stored within it as random humans across the globe.
      • Biologically preserve people attached to its branches beyond their natural lifespans.
  • Underworld, also known as Hades, was an infernal realm which served as an afterlife for the spirits of damned and unrighteous humans, mythological beasts and some dishonorable legendary warriors of Greek myths. It was governed by the Isu Hades who ruled with absolute sovereignty over the whole realm. The underworld was also sub-managed by the Isu Charon and the former Cultist Elpenor.

  • Those Who Came Before are directly based on the gods of Greco-Roman mythologies as Minerva, Juno and Jupiter (who are the equivalents of Athena, Hera and Zeus of the Greek mythology respectively) are the three major gods form the Capitoline faction of the Roman pantheon. Although it can be assumed that there is more of them which originate either from Greco-Roman or other mythologies.
    • Those Who Came Before also have members who are based from Egyptian pagan religions, such as Osiris, Seth, Iris and Horus.
  • Those Who Came Before are also based on the Biblical race of humanoid beings called the Nephilims (Nephilim in plural), who were the hybrid offspring of an angelic father and a human mother.
  • Those Who Came Before are also based on the Anunnaki of Mesopotamian mythology, particularly the parts incorporating the "Ancient Astronauts" version.
  • Those Who Came Before were believed to be Archons, a race of lesser divine beings in Gnosticism, by the Northern European branch of the Order of the Ancients.
    • In real life Gnosticism, Archons are lesser supernatural beings created by the Demiurge. They try to prevent human souls from leaving the material world through corrupting humans and reincarnating humans who failed to reach Gnosis. This therefore prevents human souls from returning to the heavenly realms beyond the material existence.
