Itsuki Yakumaru, also known as Ya-kun, is a minor antagonist in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
She's a member of Scavenger, a mercenary organization from the dark side of Academy City that serves under the board of directors. However, she despises all authority figures in Academy City and seeks to wipe them out. Yakumaru is skilled at using various chemicals as weapons.
She is voiced by Nozomi Nishida in Japanese and Juile Shields in English.
Appearance[]
Yakumaru is a beautiful young girl with blue eyes and long brown hair, though her usual manner of dress makes her look very boyish. She wears a loose square neck blouse with black spats and large brown cap that's used to conceal her hair. She also has utility belt around her waist, where she keeps her vials of chemicals.
Personality[]
Yakumaru shares the same immature traits as her teammates while still being a remorseless killer at the same time. However, she's slightly more serious than her fellow scavenger Naru and tends to get annoyed with her antics. Like the rest of Scavenger, Yakumaru is highly merciless and has a blatant lack of empathy, doing her job of killing people and destroying things with no guilt or qualms.
Moreover, Yakumaru has a great hatred of teachers due to traumatic experiences in the past and views them as the source of evil in Academy City, desiring to wipe them out entirely. She's even willing to kill anyone she deems as a "teacher's pet" or just about anybody who stands in her way. Yakumaru also demonstrates some sadism in killing people, as shown when she used her chemicals to freeze a DA member's body. In addition to this, Yakumaru proves to be quite deceptive, as she is capable of acting like a helpless and innocent girl to fool others into helping her. Due to her attractive looks, Yakumaru tends to dress in a tomboyish fashion to avoid getting hit on or scouted as a model.
Despite her ruthlessness, Yakumaru is shown to deeply care about her teammates and shares a genuine bond with each of them. She's especially close to Leader, due to knowing her longer than the others. She's also rather perceptive, able to know what Leader was planning after coming into contact with Mikoto Misaka, who had defeated Seike earlier without being told.
Biography[]
Yakumaru's background isn't fully known, though it's heavily implied that she had a traumatic experience with a teacher which led to her developing a deep seated hatred against all of Academy City's authority. She's apparently been familiar with Rita Iizumi, aka Leader, longer than the other members of Scavenger.

- Mix Master: Yakumaru's esper ability allows her to separate liquids by manipulating the specific gravity. She is able to produce a variety of phenomena by mixing these liquids. She carries various chemicals around in her utility belt. Not only can she use these chemicals on their own, she can mix them to produce various reactions using special baseball-like spheres she also carries in her belt.
- Coolant: One of her chemicals is the results of Yakumaru improving one of Academy City's coolants to create a special coolant that can quickly freeze a person solid, killing them by freezing their heart and brain.
- Liquid Thermite: Yakumaru can create a liquid thermite reaction by mixing her chemicals in her spheres. The liquid thermite reaction's heat reaches 4000 degrees, thus not even the bones of the victim are left.
- Explosion: Yakumaru can mix her chemicals in her spheres to create powerful explosions, capable of blowing up Naru's paper armor.
- Glue: Yakumaru can throw vials of an instant-glue like chemical that quickly harden to restrain the enemy.
- Metal Rusting: Yakumaru can throw vials of a water-like chemical that only rusts metal.
- Electricity: Yakumaru can throw spheres that release electricity to shock enemies.
- Painkiller: Yakumaru is capable of creating painkillers with her chemicals.
Abilities[]
- Chemistry Expertise: Yakumaru is highly knowledgeable of chemistry and is skilled at mixing various chemicals on the fly to create various effects. She also improved one of Academy City's coolants to create her own weaponized version to use in battle.
- Master Actor: Yakumaru is a very talented and deceptive actor. By dirtying her clothes and wobbling as if injured, she is able to put on an adorable yet vulnerable appearance and convince others to do as she wants. She managed to trick a group of Skill Outs to not only evacuate from their hideout but also to tell others to do so, by creating a lie about a poisonous gas leak from a nearby factory.
