Ivan Mooney is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Raphael Passero) of the Netflix show, YOU.
He is the owner of a book store named after him called Mooney's. He was the abusive adoptive father of the show's protagonist, Joe Goldberg.
He was portrayed by the late Mark Blum.
Biography[]
Mr. Mooney adopted Joe and got him to work with him in his book store. He trained Joe to grow up and be the manager of the store once he retired. Mooney would frequently lock Joe in a cage in the basement when annoyed by him and physically beat him many times. Mr. Mooney persuaded Joe that he locked him in the cage out of love and that, as a result, Joe had improved as a person and book manager.
After impulsively murdering Elijah Thornton for cuckolding him with his girlfriend Candace, he goes to Mooney. Mooney makes sure that Joe didn't talk to anyone and makes him take his clothes off so he can dispose of them. Mooney concludes that Joe is in no danger of being arrested so long as he doesn't tell anyone what he did and consoles him, assuring him that "some people deserve to die" and that he strongly believes Joe must have been justified in his murder.
Mooney is known to have had a stroke and has not been able to leave his house due to his fatal condition. Joe would sometimes visit him. He takes Guinevere Beck, his girlfriend, there to convince her that he did not murder his ex, Candace Stone. He is not seen again for the rest of the series, and his fate is unknown, as Joe has left New York after Candace Stone’s return. It is possible that Mooney may still be at home after the stroke or have died for unknown reasons.
Trivia[]
