“ | Okay, who's responsible for creating a Twitter account for Monika? I think it's hilarious, but for god's sake don't tell Paula. HAHAHA. It would get 4-0-4'd in a microsecond. Are you just relaying her tweets manually, or did you code some kind of pass-through layer to automate it? Based on the contents of the tweets (eg. not screaming for help) I assume they're coming from the control simulation? | „ |
~ Ive's "omg" e-mail about Monika's Twitter account. |
“ | HAHAHA! This is going to be absolutely amazing. | „ |
~ Ive expressing excitement over turning DDLC into a videogame for his amusement. |
Senior Engineer Ive Laster is the main antagonist of Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!, the updated re-release of the 2017 psychological horror visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club!.
He is an employee of Metaverse Enterprise Solutions, working within the VM1 simulation along with 5 other people, one of which is the Project Manager and his childhood friend Paula Miner, and therefore, one of the people responsible for the suffering of Sayori, Natsuki, Yuri and Monika.
Personality[]
Throughout the e-mails seen from Ive, he appears to display a playful and relaxed energy towards the suffering of the Literature Club. He reacts with amusement towards the creation of Monika's Twitter account and the fact that she does not use it to scream for help.
However, Ive is worse than the e-mails imply, as the hidden file within the game "DDLC.txt" revealed that Ive was planning to create a videogame based on the VM1 simulation, for he wanted to make the data analysis more entertaining. He also wanted to be the leader of this project in which he would turn the club's suffering into entertainment for his personal amusement, saying that it would be amazing and hilarious to watch Monika suffer an existential crisis and witness the destruction of an universe over and over, in the form of a videogame. Overall, Ive shows a childish, irresponsible and borderline sadistic approach to the project, mentioning that he wants to feel like he is in a "cool team" with a "cool name". Paula also mentions that it is hard to tell when Ive is being serious or not, as demonstrated when he suggested faking her death after breaking up with her ex-girlfriend Daphne. It is also mentioned by Paula that he is very talkative during meetings, and it is usually his fault that meetings go over-time.
Despite his indifference and amusement towards Monika's suffering, Ive appears to have a good friend in Paula Miner, as she is shown to be grateful for his help in her life, hoping that the two could have 14 million years of friendship. He is also included in the project with the reason "sure... why not". She also mentions that Ive always reminds her that nothing is as bad as they seem in the moment, and that everything would be okay. It is unknown if Laster still has this personality, but the note reveals a nicer side of him.
Biography[]
Doki Doki Literature Club +[]
The File 14 text file reveals a small part of Ive's past. Laster was the one that helped Paula Miner get the job at Metaverse, and was her childhood friend and helped her with relationship problems.
Similarly to his co-workers, Ive is never physically seen within the actual game, but he is shown both in the company e-mails and the secret files that can be found in-game. Ive is the first revealed Metaverse employee (assuming the player hasn't seen "note - insecure directory.txt" where Paula is revealed), as his e-mail "Have a nice weekend!" is the first unlocked e-mail at a 55% data requirement. Here, he explains that he is going to be on leave for the rest of the week, and leaves his co-worker Ravi Raso to schedule server time.
His second e-mail is "omg", unlocked after the player collects 70% of data, in which he expresses his amusement towards Monika's Twitter account, finding it hilarious and telling the rest of the team to not inform Paula about it. He appears to be curious on how the account was made.
If the player's time is set to 12:55 AM or 12:55 PM, Ive's note on his plans of turning VM1 into a videogame is unlocked. In this text filed called "DDLC.txt", he communicates with his fellow Metaverse employees about turning the Virtual Machine into a videogame as a way to have fun when collecting data, saying that it is a hilarious way of covering the team's tracks. He also wants to hide it from Paula as she would likely deny making something like this as she wants the project to be as professional as possible. Ive expresses a desire to make a videogame in which they could watch "cute girls" being in misery and dread, as he puts it. Ive comments that he would like to take the lead in the project in the text file "Track 06 name ideas.txt".
In later meetings, Ive's personality changes into something more serious for unknown reasons.
Trivia[]
- The name Ive comes up for the team to turn VM1 into a videogame is "Team Salvation", which appears to be a reference to the actual game developers Team Salvato.
- One of the trailers in for Doki Doki Literature Club + shows gameplay in which the player character is called "Ive". This implies that Ive Laster could have been the one playing through the game as the protagonist, and the worker resetting the VM constantly to get different results.
- There is also another theory is that Ive might possibly be the protagonist himself, given that Ive abruptly goes out of character in the same meeting where the bizarre appearance of the protagonist (referred to as the fifth entity) is discussed.
