| ~ Iwao denying that he's ill, shortly before his death. |
Iwao Maeda is a minor antagonist in the novel and manga Shiki, and the main antagonist of its anime adaption's second OVA Twenty-First Blood and Offense.
He is the father-in-law of Motoko Maeda, who upon rising again as a Shiki begins to feed upon his own family and kill them one by one, driving his daughter-in-law mad through his actions.
He was voiced by Takayuki Sugou in the Japanese version, and by Brian Mathis in the English dubbed version.
Biography[]
Iwao becomes ill and dies, gravely worrying his daughter-in-law Motoko Maeda who believes that a pandemic might be spreading through Sotoba.
After rising again, he immediately kills his son. He then moves on to his granddaughter, killing her next, then killing his wife, and finally targeting his grandson. However, he never has the chance to finish him off, as Motoko hides with her son in her bathroom until he dehydrates/starves to death.
Death[]
Tatsumi ties up Akira Tanaka and leaves him as a meal for Iwao. When he awakens from his slumber, Natsuno arrives and saves Akira. In the manga Iwao is tied up to a tree and left to burn under sunlight. His fate in the anime is implied to be by Natsuno's hand, but it is never shown how exactly Natsuno killed him.
His ambiguous death leads Motoko to hunt him down, thinking he's still alive, which influences her to burn down all of Sotoba to ensure he dies in the flames, directly causing the climax of Shiki.
Trivia[]
- Iwao is similar to Nao Yasumori. Both target their families to make them rise up and join them as Shiki. Both of their families fail to rise up as well. The only difference is that Nao kills her entire family, while Iwao fails. Nao is also very sympathetic, while Iwao is portrayed as a sinister man.
- While Iwao is relatively minor antagonist, he has one of the biggest impacts in the series, as his actions mentally break his daughter-in-law, which directly leads to the demise of Sotoba.
