Ixis Naugus is a major antagonist in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics, and the anti-villainous main antagonist of the SatAM episode The Void. Naugus was a surviving member of the Order of Ixis, an ancient organisation founded by Mammoth Mogul. After the comic continuity was rewritten by the Super Genesis Wave, the wizard was renamed Walter Naugus and became among the last of the magical troll race. Naugus has a slow raspy voice which can be heard when he speaks.
In the SatAM series, He was voiced by Michael Bell who also voiced The Fear in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Medivh in the Warcraft games, Quackerjack in Darkwing Duck, Lex Luthor in the 80s Superman Cartoon, the Bunny in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, and Grogar in My Little Pony 'n Friends.
Naugus is short, although taller than Sonic. He is a humanoid creature whose anatomy does not fit any identifiable species, although he has some features of different animals.
Naugus possesses a light complexion, red eyes and has a hunched body posture. He also has a pointy nose, sharp teeth, bat-like ears, and a horn on his head. He also has a long, white beard. His right hand resembles that of human's, while his left hand resembles the craw of a crab's. He also has stubby legs and a long, reptilian tail that he drags along the ground. For clothing, Naugus wears a purple suit covering his whole body. In addition, he wears a black cape, gray gloves on both hands, and black boots.
Naugus was created after a magical incident involving three mobian members of the Order of Ixis: a rhinoceros, a bat, and a lobster. The trio were merged together into one monstrous being that became known as Naugus. At first, The wizard tried to take over Mobius by killing King Maximillion Acorn, but got banished to the Silent Zone/Void. Later, he escaped with Dr. Robotnik (who fears Naugus) and tries again by trying to get rid of Sonic the Hedgehog as well, but he will also try to kill Robotnik for his back-stabbing moments.
After the Worlds Collide event in the Archie Sonic comics, the villain's name was changed to Walter Naugus and is no longer a hybrid creature. Instead, he is one of the last members of the Troll race, and his appearance now sports a tail.
In the past, Naugus discovered the Void, an alternative dimension full of crystals. He later collaborated with Dr. Robotnik and Snively, who created a portal for him into the Void. One day, Naugus decided to head into the Void through the portal and he ordered Robotnik to retrieve him out after an hour. As a warning in case he wanted to betray him, Naugus temporarily turned Robotnik's head into that of a crow's, much to Snivley's amusement. Even so, after Naugus got dragged into the Void by the portal, Robotnik sealed the portal behind him, leaving Naugus trapped in the Void. Over the years, Naugus plotted to get out of the Void.
Over a decade after his imprisonment, Naugus opened a portal into the Void in the middle of the Great Unknown which nearly pulled in Sonic. Although Sonic managed to escape the portal, Naugus left behind an artifact on the other side of the portal that Sonic found and took with him. From within the Void, Naugus watched Sonic with interest, whose speed would allow him to get out of the Void. To this end, Naugus planned to pull Sonic into the Void with the artifact the hedgehog had picked up.
Unfortunately for Naugus, Sonic left the artifact in the care of Sally Acorn and Bunnie Rabbot, so when the artifact activated, its magic ended up taking the girls into the Void instead of Sonic. When they arrived, Naugus began to interrogate them and learned that Sonic had not been affected by the artifact. Nevertheless, he knew that Sonic would come to save his friends, so he froze the girls in crystal.
When Sonic later arrived in the Void, Naugus greeted him and unfroze Sally and Bunnie. He then explained that Sonic's speed was needed to get them all out of the Void. Sonic, however, took only Sally and Bunnie with him and tried to escape the Void through a portal Naugus had opened. Naugus cut off their escape route however, by putting up a crystal block inside a tunnel they had to pass through. Afterward, he took the form of a sick King Acorn and lured the heroes to his palace.
When the heroes found him and fell for his disguise, Naugus told Sonic that he needed his help and that he needed to get out of the Void as soon as possible. Showing no hesitation, Sonic grabbed the disguised Naugus and ran through a portal out of the Void and into the Great Unknown with him. There, they faced the forces of Dr. Robotnik. Soon after, Naugus shed his disguise and despite his trickery, the sorcerer reveals to the hedgehog that he is in his debt and crystallized Sonic from the neck down so that he would not attack him.
Naugus then tells Sonic to be grateful to him, because he plans to get rid of Robotnik. When a Surveillance Orb then approaches the duo, Sonic explains to Naugus that Robotnik can see them through it. After greeting the doctor over the camera, Naugus released Sonic and let him return to the Void to get his friends out of there. Naugus himself then forced Robotnik to meet him. The terrified doctor thus falls on his knees and assures Naugus that he did not betray him. However, Naugus is not buying Robotnik's story and proceeds to turn his head into that of a slug's, followed by a monkey's, a crow's, and finally a pig's. Seeing this, Snively begins to weep from laugher until he falls down from his chair.
Eventually, however, he discovered that his legs had begun to crystallize because he bad been too long in the Void. After allowing Robotnhik to escape, Naugus told Sonic and Sally that he and the King, who had also been brought out of the Void and had begun to crystalize as well, had to go back into the Void or they would both die. As such, Naugus opened a portal into the Void with his magic and returned there with King Acorn, not before promising Robotnik that he will return and be avenged.
In the Season 2 finale The Doomsday Project, after the Doomsday Machine was destroyed, Naugus was seen emerging from the remains in an elevator with Snively. In what would've been the third season, Naugus would be the main antagonist after being freed by Snively from the Void, among with Robotnik and the king, and fight the Freedom Fighters.
Powers and Abilities
Pre-Super Genesis Wave
Because he is a mixture of beings that represent the worlds four elements, Naugus has the power to manipulate earth, fire, wind, and water. He also has the ability to enter magical contracts with other people, which can allow him to possess their body and control all their actions (as he once done with King Acorn). Naugus can even use crystalline magic to encase people in solid crystal, although this ability only effects those he’s entered a contract with. However, Naugus can crystallize various forms of technology and control it without any restrictions.
His additional powers include the ability to shadow meld (a merging technique that allows him to move or hide in the shadows), achieve flight using his cape like wings while summoning gusts of wind, teleportation from one area to another, and can use large amounts of rings to become Ugly Naugus; his super form which greatly increases his magical powers.
After being imprisoned in the Zone of Silence for a long period of time, Naugus learned how to warp reality within the realm.
Post-Super Genesis Wave
After a cosmic event known as the Super Genesis Wave, Naugus’ history and abilities were permanently altered. In this continuity, Naugus has the power to shapeshift and can control the minds of others. He is still able to perform crystalline magic, which has now been named “Crystalmancy”, and can use it to crystallize almost anything he wishes. However, Walter’s control over crystallized technology or those brainwashed will only remain if he stays within a certain range. It is unknown if Naugus had retained any of his other powers after the Super Genesis Wave.
