This snake-like beast drawn here must be Jörmungandr, also known as the World Serpent. The book claims it's the apex predator to all dragons.
~ Jun

The Jörmungandr is the overarching antagonist of the animated television series Dragons: The Nine Realms and the main antagonist of the 8th and final season overall. It is the apex predator to all dragons who was locked away by Hiccup Haddock until being released by Thunder. It is also Tom Kullersen and Thunder's arch-nemesis.

He was voiced by an uncredited Matthew Curtis, who also voiced The Mimic, Nightmare Balloon Boy, Music Man in the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, and A.J. the Alien in Zombie Catchers.

Personality[]

Jörmungandr has no heart or soul whatsoever, and according to Jun, its only purpose is to destroy the world and everything in its path. Jörmungandr shows no remorse for those it harms or kills, and it's not above killing dragons despite the fact that it is one. To make matters worse it doesn't have a reason to destroy things, it seems to be doing it out of pure malice and pleasure. Jörmungandr is shown to have high levels of sentience which it uses to its advantage to deceive others. By sparing the lives of the nigh lights it knew that they'd stay to protect them, giving it enough time to go to the Gods Realm and rid the oxygen of the Hidden World in order to finish what it started. When the dragon riders tried to initiate the poison trap for Jörmungandr, it eventually stopped slithering, looked around, and found out what they were up to and left. Tom attempted to imprison the Jörmungandr again by using Valka's staff to allure it to the cage, but due to remembering its past experience, it didn't fall for it.

Biography[]

Season 7[]

Ancient times saw the discovery of the Jörmungandr in the Hidden World, where it threatened all dragons as the greatest predator. Hiccup eventually was found in conflict with the serpent, therefore devising a way to contain it. Hiccup used Valka's staff to lure Jörmungandr to a Gronckle Iron gate in the Dark Realm where Hiccup would move out of the way in the nick of time and lock the serpent behind it. For centuries, Jörmungandr was restrained and placed in the unique cage made in the Dark Realm that could only be unlocked by the retractable fangs of a Night Fury dragon or a descendant of Night Light.

A little over 1,300 years later, just as Buzzsaw was preparing to take control of it, the imprisoned Jörmungandr emerged. Buzzsaw appeared ahead of the Dragon Riders as they tried to stop him. Buzzsaw reappeared with the sedated Sky Torcher and used it to attack the Dragon Club while the riders were inspecting the cage. In an attempt to save his rider, Thunder had to unlock the cage holding the Jörmungandr when the Sky Torcher cornered Tom all the way up to it. The Jörmungandr was let free when the cage was unlocked, enabling it to seize the Sky Torcher and pull it back into its own enclosure, where the serpentine dragon gravely injured it. Thunder shielded Tom from the Jörmungandr, who was now on the free in the Hidden World, while Buzzsaw fled in terror.

Season 8[]

In "How to Train Jörmungandr", the serpent is shown to be attacking the Crystal Realm where the riders plan to ambush it after noticing it through Alex's sensors, much to Eugene's reluctance. The plan fails as Jörmungandr senses their presence and attacks them behind, emitting a toxic mist breath that is fortunately clouded by a steam blast from Wu and Wei. Later on, Jörmungandr makes its way to the Nature Realm while the riders recover, attacking its inhabitants. Tom and Thunder now decide to lure it back to its cage, which initially works with the use of the staff. However, the dragon remembers how it was locked in and does not fall for the trick, attacking Tom and Thunder and breaking the staff, with the whole team coming for backup. Eventually, they lock themselves in the cage, but not before Thunder is caught by Jörmungandr due to him closing the gate. Thunder releases electric shocks that stun the serpent, allowing him to escape.

In "Science vs Nature", Jörmungandr is attacked again by the Dragon Riders, with a new plan to sedate it with Speed Stinger venom to knock it out and drag it to the cage. The serpent however knows it is being lured into a trap and backs away, much to the astonishment of the team. Alex and Feathers try to lure it back and succeed but Buzzsaw interrupts by attacking Tom for using his ballista to coat venom with and shoot the serpent without his permission. Jörmungandr evades it as a result and instead pursues a now terrified Buzzsaw who retreats with Jack. It is revealed that Jörmungandr blasted its breath and attacked the duo, but Jack took the blast to save his rider, inhaling poisonous gas and breaking a wing.

In the final two-parter, the World Serpent attacks the Kings Realms but lets the Night Light family survive. Unbeknownst to Tom, who resorted to protecting the family and building a new gate for Jörmungandr, this was a trick. Jörmungandr used the previous attack as a distraction for them while he attacked the Gods Realm and the Gem Blaster. However, it was interrupted by a furious Tom who smashed into it, breaking one of its fangs before it slithered off. Tom then enters a stage of frustration before resolving a decision to rally an army of dragons to fight back. They confront Jörmungandr in the Nature Realm with backup from their army but Jörmungandr wounds the Alpha Night Light who joined the battle, killing him with its fire blast. Thunder receives the Alpha abilities before the Alpha passes away, while Jörmungandr retreats to the Ice Realm. The rest of the army follow it and continue blasting before it responds, wounding a Gem Breaker and a Featherhide. It tries to attack D'Angelo who resorts to helping the injured dragons but an enraged Buzzsaw arrives with Jack and slices the top of the serpent's head with the Timberjack's serrated wings as revenge for hurting Jack previously. Jörmungandr then retreats up to Rakke Town, destroying the area with blasts and initiating Ragnarok. But Thunder arrives later on with the Fault Ripper and Sky Torcher, commanding them to blast Jörmungandr so Tom and Thunder could use Thunder's lightning and Tom's sword to blast the snake's head and knock it out. After the battle, the team drags Jörmungandr back to its cell and locks it in. Despite losing its fight, Jörmungandr played a massive impact as it caused ICARIS to close and for Thunder to decide that humans and dragons need to be separate again so as to not risk its release.

Trivia[]

  • The Dragon riders believe the Jörmungandr is the reason dragons are ophidiophobic, due to its serpentine appearance and status as the apex predator of all dragon kind.
  • The dragon's name and designs are heavily inspired by Jörmungandr in Norse folklore.
  • It remains unknown if the Jörmungandr is the last of its kind or how it lived for so long.
  • Tom attempted to train the Jörmungandr with Valka's staff, similarly how snake charmers use the pungi to "hypnotize" a snake.
  • Jörmungandr and the Slitherwing are similar, with both portraying a snake-like body and being associated with poisonous attacks.
