The Jötunn are a minor race of antagonists in Berserk. They are a dangerous race of man-eating giants. They used to live only in the Astral world, but after the death of Emperor Ganishka the physical and astral worlds combined into one causing the Jötunn to appear in the normal plane. They would spend their time conquering land and devouring the humans that reside in it.
Appearance[]
The Jötunn mainly resemble very large and deformed humans, with large bulbous heads. Their mouths are large with many rough and uneven teeth. They are always seen as being old and masculine, with lots of hair and large muscles.
The Jötunn seem to be quite creative with their use of armor, using many different man-made objects as bodily protection such as shields, pieces of buildings and sometimes even skellingtons.
Personality[]
The Jötunn are very barbaric and dangerous toward any creature that isn’t a part of their race, but especially towards humans, eating them alive and using corpses as décor.
Despite their violence they aren’t completely mindless brutes, the Jötunn seem to have at least some intelligence compared to the many other dangerous creatures in the series.
They have their own simple language and were capable of catching and using a Hydra for their battles and the Jötunn leader seems to keep Trolls as pets.
History[]
Falcon of the Millennium Empire Arc[]
As Emperor Ganishka dies his shiva body releases an extreme amount of energy, which causes the Astral and Physical world to combine. The Jötunn are then released upon the human world.
Fantasia arc[]
The jötunn are seen in battle intending to take over Falconia. The Neo-band of the Hawk is able to defeat many of the giants and create a pathway to the jötunn leader, but he releases a Hydra into battle, Grunbeld transforms in his Apostle form and takes it down. Griffith then jumps to the jötunn leader and pierces him in one of his eyes.
Later on, Griffith orders Sonia to telepathically send the image of the dead leader across the battlefield in order to instill fear in the remaining jötnar forces. This is followed by a "cleanup operation" in which the band members slaughter the remaining jötnar.
