There is no serial killer! You stick her name up in neon and there's STILL no serial killer!
~ Taylor trying to direct John Berlin away from the truth in the investigation.
Say night night, dead girl.
~ Taylor about to kill who he thinks is Helena Robertson, but is really Margie Ross, just before being shot by her.

John "J.K." Taylor is the main antagonist of the crime thriller Jennifer 8. He's a sergeant in the Eureka, CA police department, as well as a serial killer of blind women and girls, with an obsession of targeting Helena Robertson, another blind woman and friend of his last female victim, Sgt. John Berlin, the main character, having fallen in love with and sworn to protect Robertson at the time.

He was portrayed by Graham Beckal.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Taylor lived in San Diego with his mother, who led a school that taught blind students. As surmised by Sgt. John Berlin, Taylor, at a young age, became attracted to the girls at the school where his mother worked, but when they rejected him, his resulting resentment turned into a growing psychopathy. He eventually moved to Eureka, where he rose to the rank of sergeant in the police department. But under the city's collective noses, he killed blind women and girls for the sheer pleasure of it to claim what he wanted he couldn't at the school for the blind. He's revealed to have murdered seven such women and girls before the film's events, with a signature of dismembering them "like dolls" by severing their heads and hands, as part of his psychopathology and a countermeasure.

Jennifer 8[]

His crimes came to light and into question when the severed hand of an eighth woman is found in a city landfill while trying to find another suspect. Calluses on her hand's fingers reveal she used Braille systems for reading, indicating she was blind. Berlin connected the murder to another case under the name of "Jennifer" that was never solved before the eighth woman's murder, and then six more women who were found dead or went missing, all close to San Diego; thus revealing the serial killings and leading to the belief the hand is that of "Jennifer 8". Berlin meets Helena Robertson, a blind music student in the area, and when he finds out her roommate Amber is missing, he figures out Amber is "Jennifer 8", further strengthening the serial killer theory.

As the investigation closes in on the killer, the killer starts stalking Robertson, breaking into her home within inches of her, even personally threatening her with little to no evidence to scare her. Berlin assumes it's not only because she's blind, but she could be a witness to Amber's murder. His colleague, Sgt. Freddy Ross, who believed him from the start, goes with him and surveys Robertson's dorm, partly as a sting to draw the killer out, Robertson herself safely housed with his wife Margie. The operation, tragically, goes horribly wrong: not only is Berlin knocked out by the killer, but Ross is shot dead with Berlin's pistol, framing him as the murderer.

FBI Special Agent St. Anne is called to investigate, seriously fingering Berlin for the crime and gruelingly interrogating him to get him to confess. But the interrogation reveals a crucial piece of evidence that makes Berlin realize the truth: Taylor knew about the case and went the papers to stonewall the investigation, showing Berlin that Taylor's always been the killer. This is further confirmed when he's shown in a photograph Berlin finds from sneaking into his house, but he's caught and arrested by Taylor. He tries to say what he surmises about Taylor to his colleagues, but it fails. On an upside, Margie believes Berlin in full, caring so much she posts his bail and hopes to work with him to catch Taylor before it's too late. But Taylor calls off dispatch, leading Robertson and Margie to go back to her institute, with Berlin fearing they're both in danger. When it's confirmed from Taylor breaking in and chasing Robertson down the stairs of her dorm, he briefly loses her, only to follow whom he thinks is Robertson. But she turns and pulls out revolver, revealing her face to be Margie. Taylor's finally put to an end when Margie shoots Taylor down and then a couple more times on the floor to avenge her late husband, killing Taylor and ending his crime spree for good.
