J.P. Vermander is the main antagonist of the 2022 indie horror game The Vermander Curse and a major character in the 2022 indie game Midnight Maid Night. He is a member of the Vermander Family, who is a greedy landowner who inherited his family's estate and cut corners to make more money.

Appearance[]

J.P. Vermander is a man with long, brown hair, a set of facial hair with a small moustache and beard, blue eyes, and a stocky build. He wears a black hat and a red and black suit over a red tie with a white shirt.

Personality[]

Pre-Redemption[]

Before his redemption, J.P. Vermander is shown to be an extremely greedy man who cares about nobody but himself. No matter how much money he gets, he remains unsatisfied, and cuts corners to make more money no matter the cost. In fact, he will have his family demon to do his bidding to make sure that he gets whatever he needs, even if it includes harming innocent lives, all in the name of increasing his wealth.

Post-Redemption[]

After surviving the demon's violent revenge attack on him, Vermander has a change of heart regarding his terrible life decisions and realizes that those around him are people just like him rather than assets to be exploited. After feeling remorse, which no member of his family has apparently felt for a long time, Vermander, now a changed man, vows to do whatever he can to make amends for the damage he caused. Though breaking his pact with the demon costs him his wealth and estate, Vermander considers himself lucky to be alive and finds value in the town and its inhabitants rather than the wealth he so dearly loved previously.

Background[]

Past[]

He's some rich city boy who moved out here when he inherited his family's estate. A lot of folks 'round here have to pay him rent just 'cause his family owns the land.
~ The intro on J.P. Vermander's past

Little is known about J.P. Vermander's past, except he is a member of the Vermander family. In the intro of The Vermander Curse, it was stated he moved out of a city when he inherited his family's estate, and he been practicing the family's tradition of dark rituals.

The Vermander Curse[]

The first time he's seen in the game is in a cutscene where he calls his assistant Hannah to come to his office, where he asks her why their monthly profit had decreased, to which Hannah replies to him that he didn't take part in a charitable tax deduction after they raised the threshold and the money has been sent to the local hospital he loses his temper and forces Hannah to summon a demon to kill everyone in the hospital but due to the demon failing to kill everyone before sunrise, the deal between the demon and the Vermander family was broken, but before the demon vanished from existence due to the deal being broken, the demon got his revenge by going back to the Vermander house and with the little bit of time he had left, attacked J.P, (possibly by mauling him), and almost killed him before disappearing once and for all. And once the demon was gone, Hannah finds J.P barely alive, and after contemplating whether she should let him die or not, decided to take him to the exact same hospital he was trying to destroy, and despite his actions, he was treated like every other paitent. Due to his room being next to the Front door of the hospital, Vermander constantly saw people going in which made him realize that all of them had lives just like him. After he managed to fully recover, he donated his money to the hospital and in return, the hospital let him stay in a room until he got back on his feet. He now works as a food delivery man.

The Man From The Window 2[]

He is seen delivering the takeout for the rabbit family in the tough difficulty ending.

Trivia[]

  • J.P. Vermander's facial appearance seems to have been inspired by the actor Johnny Depp.
  • J is short for Jonathan, yet we don't know what P is short for.
  • Jonathan acted just like his father Jeremiah
  • J.P. is shown to be a better man than Jeremiah ever was. Despite J.P.'s deplorable actions prior to his redemption and his petty motivation, he, unlike Jeremiah, did not end up killing anyone (as is so far known) in his game's canon ending, made an effort to change his ways and did what he could to make up for his mistakes, while Jeremiah, before the events of his own game, killed multiple people for petty reasons, never repented at all and never showed remorse for anything he did
  • .J.P.'s fate is also less severe than Jeremiah's, being mauled nearly to death by his family demon after breaking his pact with it but ultimately surviving. Jeremiah, on the other hand, was set on fire and dragged to Hell to be punished for his crimes with no hope of redemption or escape.
  • Jonathan appears in The Man From The Window 2 as a cameo character, he works at a food delivery service.
