Joran, later known as J, is a major antagonist in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. He is a member of the Consuls, and a former childhood friend to Noah and the other Kevesi Ouroborus.
He was voiced by Kanon Amane in Japanese and Gerran Howell in English.
Appearance[]
Joran is a small and chubby boy with green eyes and long green hair that covers his right eye. He wears red armor, with his helmet depicted having a black curved line below his eyes, resembling a smile, a round and flat neck like a frill, and two folded horns in the back, making it resemble a jester like Reala.
Biography[]
Joran was a Kevesi soldier and a close friend of Noah, Eunie, and Lanz. He was clumsy and often teased by his peers of being nowhere near a good fighter, yet Noah was convinced Joran would reach their level someday. Then six years prior to the game's events, their home Colony 14 was attacked by an Agnian raid one night. Joran would meet his death when he pushed Lanz out of the way of falling debris and was crushed. The three were left devastated, particularly Lanz as he never got to thank Joran for saving his life.
Sometime after his death, Joran was revived by Z, who showed him the deaths of all his previous lives, including some where he was killed by his own allies, making him realize that he was never fit for the battlefield. His feelings of weakness, further driven by envy of his friends being far more successful than anything that he ever accomplished, drove Joran to madness. In an offer for greater power, Joran took the identity of a Consul and was renamed J.
As a Consul, J was appointed as an ally of D, with the two interlinked in their first encounter with the team who would become the Ouroboros when the two were battling against Guernica Vandham, the leader of the Lost Numbers. Although he is silent as it was D who was under control at the time. Following the death of K, J gets approval from the other Consuls to face the Ouroboros next.
Later on, while the team was going through the Urayan Tunnels, they are attacked by soldiers from the nearby Colony Lambda. They flee by taking a ride down a waterfall which leads them to Colony Lambda. There, Commander Isurd attacks the party using the Lambda Ferronis itself claiming to be out for vengeance against Taion for Nimue's death, despite the fact that Isurd forgave Taion long ago. They defeat him and the Ferronis, but Isurd dissolves into mud.
Then Consul J revealed himself and removed his helmet when the team asked who he was. To their horror, J was revealed to be Joran. He explains to the shocked Noah, Eunie, and Lanz how he always hated them for being stronger than him, and taunts them how he was now stronger by revealing that the soldiers were actually "mudpuppets", lifeforms made by him using soil granted sentience by implanting memories of living soldiers. He then shows this through sadism by stabbing his creations in the back while they beg not to die. Enraged, the team battles him, but he escapes.
Later on, when the party sneaks into Keves Castle to destroy the Annihilator risking the destruction of the liberated colonies, they are intercepted by D and J, both of whom taunt the team and their posthumous allies O and P for being stupid enough to overload their interlinked form. The two Consuls effortlessly bested the Ouroboros until Eunie and Taion trick the two into attacking an illusion and destroy the Annihilator with Taion's Mondo. D and J were pinned to take them out with it, but they cancel their interlink at the last minute to avoid its explosion.
D and J make their last appearance at the Cloudkeep, ambushing the party when they awaken Queen Nia who D seemingly kills by shooting a claw at her chest. The party bests the two Consuls in their Moebius forms, where J laments not being able to defeat them despite his newfound strength being at its maximum. The team is able to reason with Joran inside, explaining how much he meant to them and why he should be fighting by their side, not Moebius. Before Joran was able to make up his mind, D pins Joran down, calling him stupid for trying to seek redemption and forcefully interlinks with him.
As the Ouroboros battle against D, Joran realizes that Moebius was only trying to use him as a tool. As such, Joran regains control over the interlink and forcefully absorbs the fog surrounding the Cloudkeep to overheat the interlink, intending to trigger an annihilation event that will kill him and D. After sharing a heartfelt goodbye to Noah and the others, Joran plunges himself over the edge of Cloudkeep into the void below and explodes. The team then tearfully mourns Joran's sacrifice.
In the post-credits scene, it is revealed that after the world was rebuilt by the combination of Bionis and Alrest, Joran was reincarnated with his other friends and are last seen calling for Noah not to miss the festivities.

- One flashback shows Joran making wooden dolls of his friends and himself. His doll is dressed in red armor, foreshadowing his eventual return as a Consul.
