Jack Bernard is the secondary antagonist of the Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode "Probability". He is a corrupt insurance executive who partners with accountant Wally Stevens in a scheme to create fake insurance plans for homeless people, and then kill them to collect the payouts.
He was portrayed by the late Lance Reddick, who also portrayed Papa Legba in the American Horror Story franchise.
Overview[]
Bernard is an executive in the insurance company that employs autistic savant Wally Stevens as an accountant, and partners with him in a scam to profit from fake insurance policies.
Stevens creates the policies using intricate numerical patterns designed to avoid them being connected to each other, and Bernard recruits homeless people to take out the policies, claiming that his firm is offering the policies as charity. After Stevens makes the policies official, Bernard kills the homeless people by beating them to death and making it look like they died in accidents. Finally, he launders the money through his company with the help of his ex-girlfriend, Marie Lofficier, who works in the company's French offices.
By the time the episode takes place, Bernard and Stevens have murdered 14 homeless people, and made $14 million.

Bernard is first seen giving his latest mark, heroin addict Leo Gergis, a physical for his insurance policy; he is scamming Gergis independently of Stevens and Lofficier without their knowledge, as part of his ultimate plan to steal all the money for himself. After the policy clears, he beats Gergis to death with a baseball bat.
After Detectives Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames of the NYPD's Major Case Squad connect Gergis' murder to the other victims and uncover the fraud, they meet with Stevens, whom his company has sent as a consultant. Stevens examines the policies and realizes that the police are on to them, and makes a panicked phone call to Bernard, who assures him that everything is under control. Soon afterward, however, Bernard steals the money.
When Stevens realizes that Bernard has double-crossed him, Stevens floods his former partner's house with gas, killing him and making it look like a suicide. Goren and Eames realize that Bernard was murdered, and eventually connect Stevens and Lofficier to the murders and arrest them.
