~ Jack Krauser to Leon S. Kennedy after killing Luis.
“
You see, in that jungle. I had a revelation. The most important thing in this world is pure, unadulterated power!
„
~ Krauser to Leon.
Jack Krauser is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Ramón Salazar) of the 2023 remake of the survival horror game Resident Evil 4.
A former Major within the United States army, Krauser served as Leon's mentor and commanding officer. He was the one who trained him into the elite operative he is today. Krauser's reasons for joining Los Iluminados stems from a gross betrayal the US government inflicted upon him, leaving him extremely bitter and vengeful towards them. He becomes obsessed with gaining absolute power in order to enact his revenge and would destroy anyone and anything in his way.
I told you again and again... You're too soft to do what's necessary. That's the difference between you and me, rookie.
„
~ Krauser to Leon during their fight.
Even when he was an enlisted man in the US Army, Krauser was an extremely brutal and cold man. Despite this, the intense and inhumane training he put his men through was in their best interests as he did genuinely want them to be elite soldiers prepared for any situation, and he deeply valued their lives and was loyal to them.
After the catastrophic event that was Operation Javier, Krauser was left devastated at the loss of his unit and snapped entirely when the US government abandoned and left him for dead. The mission covered up and essentially erased from records, Krauser swore revenge against the country he once proudly served and became completely consumed by hatred and rage.
Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known of Jack Krauser's past, but he joined the United States Army and reached to the rank of major. In addition of an experienced soldier who led many successful operations, Krauser served as a combat instructor for a top secret government program, the same program Leon S. Kennedy partook in upon being recruited as one of its would-be top agents. As part of such program, Krauser put trainees under his wing through grueling training which transferred his knowledge and wisdom in close-quarters combat and battle. Out of his students, it was Leon whom Krauser interested in because of his tenacity and desire to make a difference unlike during Raccoon City Incident.
Operation: Javier[]
The operation's accounts in Resident Evil 4 remake revealed Krauser's few other students also chosen to participate in it. The outcome of Operation Javier was much more disastrous as only Krauser and Leon who survived. To add insult to injury, power struggle within US government saw the incident covered up leading to the two compensated poorly for their share of troubles. As a result, Krauser vowed vengeance against his former superiors as much as imparted with the desire to seek out and obtain "unadulterated power" as he put it.
Los Iluminados[]
Krauser's vendetta saw him stumbling upon Los Iluminados on his own and subsequently became the faithful disciple of Osmund Saddler. Not only that, he had a hand in providing the cult modern weaponry where among them being an RPG with specialized red warhead bought from Newman Arms Corp. — the same weapon which ironically Leon used against his master later on.
In a bid to gain influence from US government, Krauser conspired with his acquaintances to kidnap Ashley Graham, President Graham's daughter, coordinating a successful mission that disabled her protection before subsequently transferred to Valdelobos to be infected with a Plaga as part of the procedure to convert her into Los Iluminados' faith. The mission was successful, and Saddler rewarded him with his very own Dominant Species Plaga before providing him a post at the cult's island base. Unlike Saddler who wary of the power of Amber, the naturally occuring Dominant Species Plaga which shares same properties as its bio-engineered counterpart in addition of empowering the latter and Recessive Plagas, Krauser was intrigued by it and even allowed researches who studied it using the Amber to improve his own Dominant Species Plaga.

He was able to speed blitz Leon at knifepoint before he could fully draw his gun from it's holster. In his mutated form, he can perform quick charge attacks, stop on a dime, and quickly retreat all at once.
Superhuman Agility: Even when not in his mutated form, Krauser can still perform incredible feats of agility, such as backflipping onto platforms and jumping over six feet. Superhuman Reflexes: His reflexes are great enough evade and block gunfire. When Leon threw a projectile, Krauser was able to easily deflect it with his sub-machine gun.
Arm Transformation: Like other hosts of Dominant Species Plaga, Krauser can will his infected body to mutate, gaining new features and abilities which made him deadlier. In this case, he mutated his left arm into a large, organic blade which he can cut through people with in one swing. He could also turn his right arm into a large shield/oversized fist hybrid.
Subordinate Species Plaga Control: Possessing Dominant Species Plaga in his system means Krauser can command creatures infected with/derived from Subordinate Species Plaga such as Ganados and Novistadors on the same vein with Salazar and Saddler, though he never used it.

"Oh, my mind's clearer than it's ever been. Now focus and show me what you've got."
"Too slow!"
"You're still a kid holding on to fantasy of what's right and wrong."
"What's wrong? Not looking too steady."
"Enough play, rookie. You haven't changed a damn bit. What a disappointment."
"I've been waiting for you, rookie. Oh, worried about the girl, is that it?"
"Hmm, that's just like you. You always had poor judgment."
"But if you think I'm going to let you out of here alive... you're even more naive than I thought."
"You can't save her. You can't save anyone!"
"Revenge? You think I'm doing all this... for revenge?"
"You see, in that jungle. I had a revelation. The most important thing in this world is pure, unaldulterated power!"

Trivia[]
Krauser's role, personality and goals were shifted in the Resident Evil 4 remake. Rather than just being Leon's partner, Krauser is now his former mentor and possesses no ties to Wesker. Instead, he joined Los Iluminados of his own volition and craves absolute power after the losses he suffered in Operation Javier.
Despite being more loyal to Saddler in the remake, Krauser is ironically instrumental in the latter's downfall; he was the one who bought the very red RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) Ada later seized for Leon during his climatic duel against the leader of Los Iluminados.
Jack Krauser's remake iteration shares similarities with Vergil from Devil May Cry, another Capcom franchise:
Both characters suffered a traumatic loss which resulted in them desiring for absolute power and revenge. Krauser lost his comrades during Operation Javier which were covered up by the US Government, seeking revenge by joining with Los Iluminados while Vergil lost his family to Mundus, resulting in him becoming a demon lusting for power.
Both characters are also considered to be the archenemy of the respective games' protagonist: Jack Krauser is the former mentor-turned archenemy of Leon S. Kennedy while Vergil is Dante's elder brother as well as his archenemy.
Both characters specialize in hand-to-hand combat particularly proficient in using sharp weapons. Krauser uses a combat knife while Vergil uses Yamato, his signature katana.
Lastly, both characters have Social Darwinist viewpoints. Krauser's statement about power ("Give up! My strength is without equal! Strength is everything. The weak can protect nothing!") is jarringly similar to Vergil's own ("Might controls everything - and without strength, you cannot protect anything; let alone yourself.").
