Jack Large is a supporting antagonist in "The Black Seal", the finale of the British comedy series The Black Adder. He is a murderous dwarf who is named as one of the six most evil men in England, having been recruited by Prince Edmund to overthrow his father, the English king Richard IV.
He was portrayed by "Big" Mick Walter, who went on to portray Ginarrbrik in the BBC version of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
Biography[]
Jack Large (apparently his real name) is described by Sir Wilfred Death as a "bull-buggering priest-killer of no fixed abode". He is an extremely violent and dangerous man who is regarded as one of the most evil men in the country, although he is sometimes disregarded by others because he's only five feet tall. This fact contributes to Jack's violence, with him threatening Edmund with death for mocking his size. Jack Large is so evil that he is feared by the other members of the Black Seal, including Edmund himself.
Jack is introduced when Sir Wilfred suggests to Edmund that they recruit him to their plot (the "Black Seal") to overthrow King Richard and establish Edmund as king. They witness Jack approaching them in a nearby field, where he gets into a fight with a random thug and kills him by headbutting him in the face. Jack then agrees to join the Black Seal at Sir Wilfred's suggestion.
In a nearby tavern, Edmund and his co-conspirators plot to storm the royal castle once Edmund has sent them a messenger, although Jack and most of the others repeatedly try to leave so they can kill random peasants. Jack also becomes homicidally angry several times when Edmund makes insensitive comments about his height.
Jack is eventually called to the royal castle by Edmund's signal (a raven), where he jumps out of a chest to ambush Philip of Burgundy at swordpoint. Jack and the others then defect to Burgundy and abduct Edmund on learning that Burgundy is the most evil man in the world. They strap Edmund into an "amusing" torture device of Burgundy's design and march off to kill the royal family and place Burgundy on the throne, stopping only to accept wine from two servants. Fortunately, the "servants" turn out to be Baldrick and Lord Percy coming to rescue Edmund, and Jack is killed along with the others when the wine is revealed to be poisoned.
