You're making a big mistake, man. A big mistake.
~ Rafferty threatening Dwight McCarthy

Jack Rafferty is a major antagonist in Frank Miller's Sin City graphic novels and the 2005 film adaptation. He is a corrupt member of the Basin City Police Department who regularly beats his girlfriend, Shelly, and tries unsuccessfully to kill Dwight McCarthy and his allies, the Girls of Old Town.

In the film adaptation, he was portrayed by Benicio Del Toro, who also portrayed Dario in License To Kill, Aaron Hallam in The Hunted, Dr. Gonzo in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, DJ in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, The Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Lawrence Talbot in the 2010 remake of The Wolf Man.

Overview[]

Rafferty is one of the many corrupt cops in the Basin City Police Department, frequently acting as a bag man for the mob and looking the other way at Senator Ethan Roark's graft and his son Ethan Jr.'s sadistic sexual crimes against children. Rafferty is also an alcoholic who frequently beats and cheats on his wife with his mistress, Shellie, a waitress at Kadie's Saloon, whom he also abuses.

In Sin City[]

Shellie leaves Rafferty after he punches her in the face so hard that her mouth swells up, costing her a week's worth of tips while she recovers. She goes back to her former lover, Dwight McCarthy, but Rafferty, who sees her more as his "property" than a person, becomes determined to get her back.

One night, Rafferty and a group of his fellow police officers get drunk and show up at Shellie's apartment, intent on having group sex with her whether she wants to or not. She threatens to castrate him with a butcher's knife while accusing him of beating her, but he laughs at her, claiming that he has never hit a woman in his life. When he goes to her bathroom, however, Dwight surprises him from behind and holds a knife to his throat, threatening to cut him "in ways that will make [him] useless to a woman" unless he leaves Shellie alone. Rafferty snarls that Dwight is making a mistake, to which Dwight replies that he has made a mistake, as well - "You didn't flush." He then shoves Rafferty's head in the bowl, which is filled with his own urine.

Humiliated and enraged, Rafferty storms out of Shellie's apartment in pursuit of Dwight, with his goons in tow. They eventually lose interest in him, however, and decide to go to Old Town to pay for sex from the prostitutes who control the area. He harasses a prostitute named Becky who is going home for the night, and who rejects his advances. Rafferty starts to get rough, finally pulling out his revolver and threatening to kill her if she does not get in his car.

In response, Miho, the prostitutes' assassin and protector, severs his hand with a swastika-shaped shuriken. As he reels from the pain, Miho kills the other police officers with her katana. At that moment, Dwight reappears to help Miho defend Becky, and Rafferty aims his revolver at him with his remaining hand; before he can pull the trigger, however, Miho throws another shuriken into the barrel, causing the revolver to explode and lodge a sharp piece of metal in his forehead. Miho then finishes the job by slashing Rafferty's throat open, nearly decapitating him and causing him to bleed to death.

Dwight tries to dispose of Rafferty's body by putting it in his car and driving it into a tar pit, intending to jump out before it starts sinking. On the way there, however, he begins hallucinating that Rafferty is talking to him through the gash in his throat, his head nearly falling off as he taunts Dwight that he will be caught and murdered by the Basin City Police. They are indeed stopped by a patrol cop, but Dwight slams Rafferty's head into the dashboard to make it look like he is passed-out drunk. The patrol cop lets them go.

As Dwight is about to dispose of the body, however, he is attacked by a group of Irish gangsters, who sever what is left of Rafferty's neck and take the head for themselves. Miho once again shows up to defend McCarthy, killing the mercenaries and retrieving Rafferty's head. He returns to Old Town only to find that the Irish mob has kidnapped his lover Gail, the leader of the Old Town prostitutes. He makes a deal with the mobsters to give them Rafferty's head in exchange for Gail's freedom, but double crosses them by filling the head with explosives and throwing it at them, killing several of them when it explodes.
