History[]
Background[]
Jack Sheridan was born on June 15, 2178. When he came of age, he enrolled in the Union Academy, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Communications. He would enlist and study at the Union Army War College and eventually the Union Intelligence Agency (UIA). He would come to become a Scorp behavioral & geographical specialist, eventually being identified as the UIA's greatest asset against their sworn enemies. Throughout his career, he was involved in many sorties, earning him decorations and commendations, including Order of the Line for Orx Alpen II, Medal of Valor for the Battle at Cross Creek and another Medal of Valor for for the Spur Rebellion.
In 2215, Sheridan led a mission that included Joshua Gant, Ron Pearl and Stephen Kylie into the Scorp Imperial Sector 14B. The Scorp ambushed the operatives, while Sheridan allowed for Pearl to be overwhelmed. Pearl was presumed deceased, officially MIA behind Scorp lines, while Sheridan was court martialed. As Pearl's body was never found, Sheridan was acquitted on M.O. reprimand. As a result, Gant resigned from his post with the Union.
The following year, Sheridan joined UIA Counterintelligence and planted himself in Scorp territory, allowing for him to develop his knowledge of the Scorp technology & culture further. Unbeknownst to his superiors, he silently observed the Scorp's experiments on Union POWs for modifying the human genome to create a super-soldier called the "G-Nome". Intent on claiming and cloning the G-Nome, Sheridan organized a faction of Union loyalists and constructed a massive fortification with a recombination lab in the Frayed Valley, deep in the neighboring volcanic Shalten Frontier.
G-Nome[]
In 2225, as the conflict between the Union and the Scorp reaches a breaking with the discovery of the mineral-rich Phygos Star System that would determine control of the entire galactic spiral arm. The Scorp have made their move by bringing the G-Nome experiments to fruition, which the UIA have realized. As such, UIA Director General Allance Wilkins re-enlists Gant (the player character) and assigns him a team that includes Kylie, Dr. Victoria Thane and an unidentified specialist - Sheridan.
After traversing the Darken and Merc territories to assemble his team members, Gant is reintroduced to Sheridan beyond the Merc-Scorp border. With pleasantries out of the way, Sheridan first directs the team to destroy the LATLON Communications Array at Ur-Kinsk. With the Scorp's long-range communications hampered, Sheridan informs the team that the G-Nome research facility's coordinates are housed at Ur-Alr, which is unfortunately guarded by mine fields, common around Scorp facilities. As such, he leads the team to Ur-Ulit, to commandeer Scorp vehicles for their illumination devices equipped for navigating the mine fields. The team moves on Ur-Alr, where they obtain the coordinates for the G-Nome facility.
As the team approaches the G-Nome facility, Sheridan takes command of the neural inhibitor, on the pretense of needing it in case the G-Nome escapes. He directs the team to raze the base. After the team breaches the perimeter, Gant calls in an ion-strike against the laboratory. Just as the building goes up in flames, the G-Nome escapes and Sheridan directs his own ion-strike against Gant. As Gant narrowly evades death, the Scorp capture Kylie and Sheridan's loyalists take custody of the G-Nome.
Sheridan and his forces begin their trek toward the Shalten Frontier, seeking to clone the G-Nome and move its DNA samples off-planet. Sheridan sends a diversionary force toward Ur-Kinsk, where a united force of the Scorp and Gant's team stage a defense, while his main column escapes through the Keersh Marshes. While he initially has time on his side, Gant closes the gap by braving the dangerous war zone.
Sheridan arrives at his base and dispatches an orbital transport to retrieve the G-Nome's DNA for shipping off-planet. His base is immediately besieged by Gant, Kylie, Thane and Wilkins himself. The team overwhelms Sheridan's defenses and destroy the lab - in the commotion, Sheridan kills Kylie. With the G-Nome in the cargo bay of his Union Heavy Assault HAWC, Sheridan attempts to flee, but is intercepted by Gant. Despite being in the more powerful vehicle, Sheridan is overwhelmed and killed by Gant. In the immediate aftermath, Gant incapacitates the G-Nome and learns that it is none other than Pearl, mutilated by the Scorp's horrifying experiments.
Personality[]
Sheridan speaks with a drawl English accent. He imparts sophistication and coolness that tiptoes between calmness and arrogance. He perfectly hides his machinations from the UIA superiors he answers to.
He is an exceptionally far-thinking and meticulous man, having spent the majority of his intelligence career setting the stage for him to betray the Union and claim the G-Nome from the Scorp for his own gain. He obfuscates facts for personal advantage regularly, as evident by the fact that he allows for Pearl to be captured by the Scorp, giving them a human POW subject to be experimented upon. Using the privacy of his undercover operations in Scorp territory, he uses his charisma to organize an entire battalion of Union soldiers to betray their own kind. His technical cunning is shown to be impeccable; he not only comes to intimately comprehend Scorp studies further than any human, but he constructs a stronghold with cloning capabilities within the Shalten Frontier.
Trivia[]
- In the second draft of G-Nome, the main antagonist was a disgraced Union official named General Robert Trenton, who triggers a weapon of mass destruction called a phase implosion bomb on Ruhelen that wipes out the brunt of the Scorp and many Union colonists during the prologue. He escapes imprisonment, claims the G-Nome strain and kills Pearl during the climax of the story, leading to Gant to chase him down, inject himself with the strain and battle to the death. Subsequent rewrites had the character changed to Sheridan and had his checkered past changed to conspiracy to kidnap rather than genodice.
- If the player attacks the bridge Sheridan is attempting to flee across in the final mission, "Mano-a-Mano", he immediately retaliates against them.
