Failing playwright reverses fate with blinding success and marriage into nobility...
~ The newspaper reports the news of Jack Smith's success.

Jack Smith is a minor antagonist in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

He is the overarching antagonist of Jack the Ripper's Flashback during the Fourth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament.

Jack Smith is a failed playwright who, after conceiving the future Jack the Ripper together with Mary, promised her a better life as soon as he became successful, a promise never kept in the end.

He is voiced by Yūji Murai, who has also voiced Brahma always in Record of Ragnarok and Baku in Edens Zero, in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. He is voiced by Tony Curran in the English dub.

Appearance[]

Jack Smith is a man with a similar appearance to his son, the future Jack the Ripper. He has straight dark red hair and a mustache. He wears formal attire, which includes a sleeveless vest over a white shirt and tie, trousers and shoes.

Personality[]

Jack Smith appears to be an accomplished playwright, as one of his plays became famous. Nonetheless, he is still an irresponsible and dishonest person, as he promised Mary to come back for her after his work was successful and he didn't keep his promise. He also proved to be a coward when his son came to him with a knife in his hand.

Biography[]

Jack Smith is a failed playwright living in London. One evening he spends a night with Mary at the brothel and, at the end of the evening, promises that as soon as he becomes successful as a playwright he will come back for her. Mary believes his promise and keeps the son they conceived that evening: the future Jack the Ripper.

Fifteen years later however, Jack Smith becomes famous as a playwright and marries a noblewoman, breaking his promise to Mary. This shocks the woman who comes to disown the future Jack the Ripper as her son, leading him to kill her. Soon after, the boy goes to see Jack Smith at his home and, after making him understand that he is his son, kills him by slitting his throat.

Powers and Abilities[]

Skilled Writer and Playwright: Jack Smith is a writer and playwright of remarkable ability. While not having much success during most of his career, he eventually managed to rise to fame with his play "Gin and Rose in The Slums", even attracting the attention of the nobility and marrying a noblewoman.

Trivia[]

  • Jack the Ripper later used his father's identity as a codename to work in the vigilante organization he was part of.
  • Jack Smith's play Gin and Rose in The Slums seems to be a love story between a wealthy man and a prostitute. It is likely that the play was inspired by Jack Smith relationship with Mary, even though he did not love her.
