~ Jack to Mel. |
Jack the Rat is a supporting antagonist in the pilot episode of the 2025 indie animated web series The Gaslight District by GLITCH. He was a resident of the titular district and an associate of The Smiling Dead until he found out that Mel was the "Human Born of the Angel's Egg", a fact that his boss, Ken, wanted to keep secret.
He tried to warn everyone of the Human, but was foiled by his former associates, resulting in him getting "Cemented" (Having his feet encased in cement and thrown into the ocean, dooming him to a torturous existence of drowning and becoming resurrected by the Black Hand over and over).
He was voiced by John Whinfield, who also voiced Mud in the same series.
Appearance[]
As a Rotling, Jack is a skeletal humanoid with a boxy head, yellow eyes and exposed teeth. Unlike most Rotlings, however, Jack has several features distinguishing him, such as the white pompadour wig he wears and his clothing: a blue jacket with puffy white sleeves and a yellow zipper, He also has visible pupils, unlike most other Rotlings.
Biography[]
Jack was a member of The Smiling Dead, working as the dishwasher for their butcher shop. It appears that the Smiling Dead were quite fond of him, with Mud remarking on his liking of him and Jack posing in many of their photos with them.
One day while washing dishes, Mel was reading a women's magazine and got so aroused that she nose bled. Jack saw that her blood was black and realized in horror that she is the human that was prophesied to bring the end of the eternal live in the Gaslight District. He ran from the butcher shop and tried to drive away, but Ken would chase after him with the rest of his gang. A highspeed chase followed onto the highway where Jack tried to shake them, but then he got shot in the head by Mud. Mel hopped onto his car and tried to coerce him into staying quiet, but he refused to be silenced. Mel then told him that all he had to do was keep quiet and Ken would have shown him mercy. Jack threatens Mel by asking her what would happen to Mud and Breadhead when they find out she is the human, or if the whole distrcit pieced it together, she rebutes that she won't let it happen, but then Jack's car crashes.
Ken, Mud, and Breadhead approach his car and open the door, but Jack frantically shoots them multiple times until his ammo was spent in a desperate attempt to kill them, but due the the Black Hand, they ressurect and laugh sadistically at him. Breadhead grabs the pleading Jack and crushes him and tosses him aside. Jack points to Mel and tries to say to Mud and Breadhead that she is the human and that Ken lied to them, but they couldn't understand him. Mud expresses how the shop won't be the same without him and puts a cigarette in his mouth and lights it for him. Ken looks at Jack with pitty and then tells Mud and Breadhead to cement him.
Jack is tied to a cement block and thrown into the ocean along with his car. Mel, Mud, and Breadhead sing a twisted song as he screams and struggles while sinking into the dark depths below. Due to the power of the Black Hand, Jack would drown to death only to be ressurected and drown over and over again. later back at the butcher shop Mud eats the money inside Jack's wallet. When Mel and Ken were discussing the plan to capture the "human" egg ( Which is really an angel egg) she tells Ken that she is tired of her buddies getting cemented but Ken rebutes that it's her fault it keeps happening, though he says that Jack seeing her nose bleed was a honest mistake and nothing coud be done about that.
In the credits, Jack is seen again, still trapped beneath the ocean until a fishing hook drops down next to him, possibly hinting that he will be fished out and return.
