Jackie Sullivan is the secondary antagonist of the 2024 jukebox musical psychological thriller film Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 film Joker.

He is a corrupt guard at the Arkham Asylum institution who regularly abuses the patients and has a semi-antagonistic relationship with the Joker.

He was portrayed by Brendan Gleeson, who also played John C. McCloy in Mission: Impossible II, Lord Johnson-Johnson in A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Jack Van Meter in Dark Blue, Menelaus in Troy, a disguised Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Raynald of Châtillon in Kingdom of Heaven.

History[]

Jackie Sullivan is a corrupt guard at Arkham who regularly abuses his patients and gives no empathy towards Arthur Fleck who is most famously known as the Joker, often asking him if he has any joke to tell despite being well aware of his misery, he has him shaved as part of his job at Arkham, treating and addressing him with a dark sense of humor, and even taunting him when the barber accidentally nicks the edge of Arthur's mouth to cause a mild bleed as well as not providing him an umbrella in the rain.

However, Jackie would often soften up to Arthur and affably converses with him on a frequent basis, even asking him if he feels like a star, giving him a cigarette and even allowing him to attend singing class in another ward as well as watch a movie with him and other patients. Though it is implied the simple acts of kindness where Arthur is given privileges is a result of a bribery conducted between himself and Harley Quinn in order for her to get close to Arthur and start a relationship with him.

Jackie informs Arthur in a sarcastic manner that he is on the news when Harvey Dent opens a fiery case against him, appealing for a death penalty against him. Jackie is also present when Harley ignited a fire in the music class during a movie screening for her fellow patients where Jackie can be seen running away from the flames while calling out to Arthur as he and Harley run away and attempt to escape.

One night, when Arthur still in his Joker persona returns to Arkham from court, Jackie who had watched him mention the guards of Arkham in a negative and disrespectful manner on live TV, calling him fat and stupid, immediately vents his rage out by brutally beating and possibly raping him in retaliation together with two other guards, openly mocking him about his insecurities, but Arthur kept laughing and mocking Jackie back much to his anger.

And although the violence became severe enough to send Arthur into a state of catatonia for the rest of the night. Arthur's fellow inmate and friend Ricky Meline, began singing to support Arthur, and due to him refusing to stop singing as an act of defiance, Jackie opens his cell and strangled him to death in a fit of rage, which even shocks the other cruel Arkham guards, who tried to get him to stop only for a still-angry Jackie to scream at them to shut up.

As Sullivan bullies other patients, Arthur helplessly watches and feels heavy remorse about his own deeds and attitude, which is what led him to renounce his Joker persona all together. Jackie is last seen passing by Arthur, winking and nodding at him shortly before his murder at the hands of an unnamed psychopathic patient who is a fan of his.

Personality[]

Jackie is a sadistic guard and a bully in uniform. He has no problems with abusing his power and beating patients up and often loses his temper which sometimes result in outright murder. He also has a dark sense of humor, often gleefully taunting Arthur who is clearly miserable, by constantly asking him for a joke in exchange for cigarettes. In addition to that, he is very corrupt and is implied to have taken bribes from other patients or outside parties in exchange for money, most notably by Harley Quinn who wanted to get close to Arthur. He is also careless to the wellbeing of the patients, as evident when he blatantly didn't provide Arthur an umbrella in the rain outside while he and the other guards had their own.

He seems to have an affable and pleasant attitude on the surface, as evident by a handful of friendly interactions with Arthur but most of his comments towards the inmates are thinly veiled insults, if not outright mockery. He can be prone to disproportionate violence if he feels provoked. He also seemed to despise if the inmates ever acted as if they were equal to the guards, as he threatened Arthur and Ricky for just sitting on the bleachers that the guards used; likewise, when Jackie and Arthur appeared to actually have a friendly moment, so Arthur lightly tapped Jackie's arm in affection, but in response Jackie strongly slapped the back of Arthur's head, as he was so incensed at even the illusion of equality between guard and inmate.
