Jack "Jacko" Argyle is the overarching antagonist of Agatha Christie's 1958 detective fiction novel, Ordeal by Innocence. He was an adopted son of Leo and Rachel Argyle. By the start of the story, Jacko died in prison of pneumonia, convicted of killing his stepmother.

By the end of the story, while not being the murderer directly Jacko was revealed to be the true mastermind instead, being the motivator of the real killer and convinced them into killing his stepmother, but the killer later betrayed him and left him to die in prison after taking the fall.

In the 1984 film adaptation, he was portrayed by Billy McColl. In the 2007 television film adaptation, which served as an episode of Agatha Christie's Marple, he was portrayed by Burn Gorman, who also played Karl Tanner in Game of Thrones, Darth Angral & Darth Tormen in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Adam from Forever. In the 2018 BBC miniseries adapation, where he was renamed as Jack Argyll, he was portrayed by Anthony Boyle, who also portrayed John Wilkes Booth from Manhunt (2024).

Trivia[]

  • While Kirsten is the direct murderer of Rachel Argyle and the subsquent murders later, Jacko is actually the main antagonist of the book (albeit posthumously) since he was the mastermind behind his mother's death and was responsible for Kirsten's start of darkness.
  • In Agatha Christie's Marple, Jacko's characteristics remained as faithful as that of the novel, but the cause his death was changed from sickness to execution via hanging.
  • In the 2018 version, Jack's characteristics changed drastically. In this adaptation, while he was still unlikeable and acted like a jerk towards others, he was genuiuely and completely innocent of his stepmother's murder and was not involved in it at all. It was Leo Argyll who killed his wife and framed Jack for it.
    • In addition, in this version, Jack is the biological son of Leo and Kirsten, resulting in Leo having him beaten to death in prison when he threatens to reveal his true parentage.
