Synopsis

The story of Jacques de Aldersberg from The Witcher 2007.

Biography[]

Past[]

Information about Jacques de Aldersberg's past is scarce according to a butcher straight from the Trade Guild, Jacques was a trawler who is strongly blinded by hatred for non-humans and when he became a knight of the order he broadcast his felt hatred for non-humans. After the death of Rudolf Valaris Grand Master of the Order of the White Rose, Jacques took over from him as Grand Master, during his reign over the Order Jacques introduced radical reforms that changed the Order's structures and its purpose. After Jacques' changes, the Order of the White Rose was transformed into the Order of the Flaming Rose giving it the symbol of the burning rose which from now on was seen on standards and their armaments becoming the most powerful political and military order in Temeria.

The career of the Grand Master of the Order of the Flaming Rose[]

After the transformation of the Order of the Flaming Rose, Jacques was respected by the nobility and peasants alike due to his charisma resulting from the fact that he became popular and on a massive scale persecuted Inhumans who were considered enemies in Temeria society. However, the greatest enemy for the entire order turned out to be the Scoia'tael fighters against whom they fought brutally and intervened. Jacob's absolute lack of tolerance towards non-humans causes huge tensions and an increase in racist attitudes towards the inhabitants of Vizima. Some of the residents who referred to the rumors that one of the most famous knights of the Order of the Flaming Rose, a certain Siegfried of Denesle, was allegedly the bastard son of Jacques de Aldersberg himself.

Despite his cruel and immoral actions, Jacques enjoyed sympathy and admiration for the king of Temeria, Foltest, and the royal nobility, which allowed his order to grow even more in position. However, the growing position of the Order of the Burning Rose of Jacques de Aldersberg is a serious threat because it is a new political competition.

According to Triss Merigold, Jacques de Aldersberg was a child of the Source and had powerful magical abilities, but Jacob chose not to attend any magical school. Although Jacques did not attend any school, he most likely learned his magical skills with the help of various religious sects.

Collaboration with Salamandra[]

Although Jacques is fondly remembered by other inhabitants of Vizima, no one knew who the Grand Master Jacques de Aldersberg really was, who, secretly from everyone, was planning to overthrow King Foltest and take over power in Temeria and even the entire world after causing an uprising in Vizima organized by his Scoia'tael enemies. This uprising is to dethrone King Foltest, who will give his power to the Order of the Flaming Rose so that they can effectively suppress the Scoia'tael.

In order to successfully trigger an attack in Vizima, Jacques decided to recruit Azar Javed, the leader of the criminal organization Salamandra, into his plot. Jacques, who was obsessed with his worldview, showing him Vizima destroyed by glaciers and snow storms, was further motivated by the creation of mutants perfectly capable of not only surviving in cold conditions, but also incapable of experiencing feelings, completely obedient to his will. Wanting to find a way to create this type of mutants, Jacques tasked Javed with obtaining secret ingredients to create mutants in Kear Morhen. Salamandra herself manages to get these ingredients, causing a fight with the surviving witchers from the wolf school. Moreover, the Order of the Flaming Rose is allegedly fighting with the Salamandra organization itself to get rid of suspicions of cooperation.

After Foltest left Temeria for another border, Jacques decided to use his absence to secretly implement it into his plan. First, he ordered Roderick to Forge Edicts so that he could destabilize the situation in the capital to Foltest's disadvantage. Roderick's forgeries began with the introduction of quarantine, justifying the existence of Catriona's illness, then a state of emergency was introduced in the Trade District to hide and hinder the investigation of the unmasking of the Order's cooperation with the Salamandras not only at night but also during the day, but all the safe conducts allowing to walk around the district in a state of emergency do not have signatures. What's more, Roderick managed to convince Princess Adda to side with Jacques to take power over Temeria in exchange for participation in the forgery of edicts. To which Adda agreed, becoming a supporter not only of the Order but also of the Salamandras, conspiring against her father.

The Witcher[]

Before the appearance[]

Although Jacques is not seen from the prologue to the beginning of Chapter V, you can still hear from NPC characters, for example commoners, you can learn in Chapter I that the Grandmaster once passed through the borough and gave many opportunities to recall his memories to the inhabitants of the borough. Old people tell many myths that Siegfried of Denesle was a bastard when in fact he was the son of Eyck of Denesle. And in Chapter III we can learn from a butcher from Vizima, who is a staunch opponent of Jacques himself and all circles influencing the country's policy about his past and his negative opinion about him.

The Return of King Foltest[]

First appearance of Jacques de Aldersberg in The Witcher

First appearance of Jacques de Aldersberg in The Witcher.

Jacques first appears in Chapter V when King Foltest, Velerad, he and his escort of the Order of the Flaming Rose were attacked by the Scoia'tael led by Yaevinn, causing a rebellion in Vizima. Jacques sent out her Order troops to pacify most of the elven aggressors from the Scoia'tael, the Grandmaster himself used his magic to create fireballs to knock some of them down. Jacques' arrival itself caused great enthusiasm among the royal guards, Foltest himself thanked for effectively holding the Scoia'tael and then coldly said goodbye because Jacques wanted to command the entire Temerian army, which he considered an impudent proposal and did not allow him to command his army. After Foltest's response, Jacques reacted that he might not help if further threats appeared.

Some time later Jacques meets Geralt at an unexpected moment, not knowing which side he is on (Order, Scoia'tael or neutral) while he is patrolling in a swamp cemetery near Old Vizima. The Grandmaster leads a squad from the Order in an attack on the hordes of bloedzuigers and archespores that recently attacked Geralt and his friends. When Jacques' squad organized a raid on the hordes of monsters, Jacques used magic to eliminate most of the monsters while getting rid of the huge problem that was rampant in the swamps near Old Vizima. After getting rid of the huge number of monsters, Jacques will give a shout of his order and begin another intervention.

After eliminating Hord Bloedzuigers and archespors by the Order Geralt, he can personally talk to Jacques himself by asking him to various questions. However, Jacques responded to all topics in a way that is not understandable to Geralt, saying that he paid his debt a long time ago and other enigmatic issues of the Grand Master. However, regardless of the decision from the player, the conversation between Geralt and Jacques may affect the course of the conversation. If Geralt recognizes Jacques's views that they are valuable because Jacques will decide who is to be honored to be in an ideal world or simply get rid of him for the unfavorable to elves and dwarfs. When they talk to talk, the Grand Master will take his troops with him, including Siegfried, if Geralt fights on the side of the order and set off back to the Vizima.

Confrontation with Geralt[]

After the first meeting with Geralt, Jacques ordered Roderick not to let anyone into the old manor so that no one would learn about the Salamandra's headquarters and his secret plans. At the end of Chapter V, when Geralt killed Javed and destroyed the entire Salamander, he looked into the magic mirror, in which he saw a shocking hologram of Jacques demanding that Azar Javed send more mutated people to find out what the results of the experiments are. Then Jacques, shocked by the sight of Geralt, who tells him that Javed is dead, but that he will deal with him personally, and then with the Aard sign destroys the hologram mirror and leaves the Salamander base.

When Geralt tells his allies that Jacques de Aldersberg was collaborating with the Salamanderas, they will react:

  • Siegfried from the Order's side couldn't believe this turn of events and thought they were lies, but he understood that he had to go to Vizima to stop him.
  • Yaevinn from the Scoia'tael side will tell Geralt that he is not surprised by the Order's cooperation with the Salamanders because he considers humans to be a criminal race, yet he goes to Vizima to help Geralt stop Jacques.
  • Triss Merigold, who is neutral, is surprised and moved by the fact that the Order is cooperating with this criminal organization, then goes with Geralt to Vizima to defeat Jacques.

Regardless of the player's decision, whom Geralt will notify, Geralt and his potential ally always decide to confront Jacques de Aldersberg by informing King Foltest about Jacques' true motivations. Once they inform him, they reach the harbor and set sail, ending Chapter V.

Inciting an uprising against the Non-humans[]

Jacques de Aldersberg: A new era dawns. An era of super humans. None will stop me! I appoint you my new adjudant. Know you assigment?
Mutant assassin: Kill the Witcher.
Jacques de Aldersberg: Then go.
~ Jacques orders mutant assassins to kill Geralt.

In the film recognizing the Epilogue of the game, Jacques de Aldersberg stands in front of the Order's monastery in the Monastery district in Vizima surrounded by his retinue consisting of several residents of Vizima, nobles and the former mayor of the village of Murky Waters Tobias Hoffman, however, there are mutant assassins near him. When one of the veterans of the battles from the Trade district in Vizima named Adalbert with his last strength approaches the Grand Master to explain to him that the Trade district in Vizima was conquered and taken over by the Order, but due to the actions of Geralt of Rivia led to the death of de Wett and the removal of Striga's dependence on the decisions made by the player, which is why Jacques' order did not recover anything to destroy Foltest.

After Adalbert informed him, Jacques realized that Geralt was a threat to his plans, and thanked the dying Adalbert for providing him with important information. After Adalbert's death, Jacques ordered Tobias to clean up Adalbert's corpse and then appointed him as his adjutant to one of the mutant killers and entrusted him with the mission of spreading chaos in the city by killing civilians. The uprising of Vizima was allegedly caused by the people because Jacques planned to secretly cause their massacres initiated by his people from the Order. The elves and dwarves decided to defend themselves for their life's work against the Order of the Flaming Rose, putting on armor and equipping themselves with sharp weapons.

Furthermore, Jacques cared so much about the ongoing riots that he showed the poor citizens of Vizima, fleeing the riots and offering them shelter in his monastery. This was to present his order and himself as the saviors of humanity from their destruction, all in order to manipulate the moods of all the people who wanted to take refuge, inspiring massacres in the streets by releasing the mutants he had made. This was to cause all the frightened citizens to blame all the riots on the non-humans and King Foltest.

At the moment when Geralt entered the fight to stop the chaos caused by Jacques, political talks were taking place between Foltest and the king of neighboring Redania, Radovid V the Stern. Where both rulers decided to get rid of the huge threats caused by Jacques de Aldersberg whose troops began to fight with the Temerian soldiers. Regardless of the player's choice of which side he chose, the plot will look like this:

  • If Geralt sides with the Order, the Order itself will not be considered an enemy by the King due to its great services in suppressing the Scoia'tael terrorist rebellion, but Jacques' servants and allies will be. After killing the Grand Master, Siegfried of Densele takes over the role.
  • If Geralt sides with the Scoia'tael, the Order of the Flaming Rose will be declared public enemy number one. And the Scoia'tael insurgents themselves will receive amnesty for their outstanding service in combating the Order.
  • If Geralt is neutral, both Scoia'tael and the Order will be recognized as enemies of the Temeria, who led from the capital of Vizima standing with one battlefield, so they will have to punish.

Regardless of the side Geralt chose to fight Jacques, King Foltest will offer him 8,000 orens for the Grandmaster's head. Geralt accepted both rulers' offer, although he was initially outraged by them only because they treated him like a paid killer, but later offered 10,000 orens after some thought, then agreed to 8,000 when Foltest wanted 2,000 orens in income tax. During the hunt for Jacques, Geralt, breaking through the burning Vizima, will have to deal with an army of mutants created by Salamandras. One of the groups of mutants unfortunately chosen by the Scoia'tael or neutrality side will be led by Siegfried of Denesle who wants to murder all civilian refugees. Ultimately, Siegfried fails to mass murder refugees because Geralt kills him.

When Geralt, breaking through the mutant army, ends up in a monastery where the monastery guards do not let him in because he is a Witcher. After Geralt dealt with the guards, he enters the monastery where he sees the true face of the Grandmaster taking care of the faithful gathered in the monastery. Geralt looks at the view of the friendly people arriving in the monastery away from the riots, including many women and children, and Jacques de Aldersberg himself picks up a baby from a resident of Vizima. Despite not being so hostile, Gerart approached Jacques to make him realize that what he did does not justify him from the vile deeds he committed. To which Jacques replied that he was explaining his motives through dreams and visions that he had about them predicting the destruction of humanity by white cold and he wants to maintain it. To which Geralt does not believe it, considering it to be nonsense that amused him the witcher and then draws his sword to start fighting the Grandmaster, Jacques, unfazed by Geralt's attitude, casts a spell on both of them, teleporting them to the icy wastes.

Confrontation in the icy wastelands[]

Geralt and Jacques in a vision of Vizima Frozen by the White Frost

Geralt and Jacques in a vision of Vizima Frozen by the White Frost.

After Jacques teleported Geralt to the icy wasteland, he thought that everything around him was an illusion, to be deceived by the Grand Master. However, Jacques is very serious about the frozen views, as he shows him a place where they find frozen Temeria in the future, at the ruins of a monastery covered in layers of ice. Despite Jacques' firm attitude, Geralt still does not believe him, so he has a long journey ahead of him, straight to the arena, where Jacques gives his entire vision of the world.

After Geralt dealt with the Ifrits, Jacques, terrified, teleported to another place to avoid a real fight with the Witcher. Jacques, aware of the threat Geralt poses, decided to summon his beasts from his magic, such as Ifrits, boneheads, failed experiments, mutated assassins and knights. Despite the summoned army of monsters, the White Wolf effectively fights them thanks to the unacknowledged help from his companions in the form of specters who in an unobvious way to the world of visions created by Jacques. Depending on the player's decisions throughout the game, they can be Triss Merigold, Shani, Abigail, White Rayla, Toruviel, Celina, Adda White, Vincent Meis or even Roderick de Wett who was previously his enemy. If Triss or Shani accompany Geralt into the fight with Jacques, they will make him realize that the world that Jacques de Aldersberg created is not a true prophecy of the future, but only Jacques' own delusions. If de Wett accompanies, observing from his perspective, he will consider it unimportant who wins because there will be one less monster.

During Geralt's hunt, Jacques presents his views on witchers, other races, and destiny three times so that Geralt will stop hunting him and justify his actions to save humanity. However, Geralt condemns him for his criminal actions that have led to chaos throughout Vizima. In the vision of the world created by Jacques de Aldersberg, he is able to exercise power over illusions, making it so that none of Geralt's friends' ghosts are able to reappear, so the White Wolf must face the Grand Master alone.

Jacques tried to convince the White Wolf to dissuade him from fighting for the last time, but it didn't work, so Jacques called him very stubborn and decided that witchers should need shepherds with sheep. To which Geralt replied that he was a madman and if he wasn't afraid, he would have taken Lebioda to the hospital a long time ago. Regardless of the player's decision, Geralt can answer that if he surrenders and lays down his weapons, he will save several living human beings or that his time is up and calls him to a fight to the death. To which Jacques replied if he is sure of it, he will teach him a very painful lesson and then conjure a powerful storm in the arena where he will bring Geralt himself to the group of mutants he summoned.

After defeating the army of mutants summoned by Jacques de Aldersberg, the final battle between Geralt and Jacques takes place. Jacques himself enters the arena to fight the White Wolf and before the fight, he summons a magic circle and a squad of Ifrits in the hope that he will have a chance in the fight with Geralt. He is also well prepared for the potential fight, using the most powerful sword Ard'aenye and protects himself with his own shield, a knight of his order.

Eredin's meeting and death[]

After Jacques was critically wounded by the Witcher, the King of the Wild Hunt Eredin unexpectedly joins the fight, who had been watching their fight until then. During the meeting, Eredin stuns Jacques only because he disappointed him so much and starts a long conversation with Geralt in which he tries to make the witcher realize that the team is responsible for spreading terror and mass murders. However, Geralt did not fall for his manipulations, so Eredin asks Geralt for permission to take Jacques de Aldersberg's soul at the end of the conversation. Regardless of the player's choice, Jacques de Aldersberg can end up in two ways:

  • If Geralt agrees to take Jacques' soul from Eredin, it ends with the death of the Grandmaster himself, and Eredin himself replies that it was the right thing to do.
  • If Geralt refuses, he will tell the King of the Hunt that Jacques de Aldersberg is his and that none of his arguments will convince him, because he will kill him anyway. To this, Eredin tells Geralt that his escape route from his own death ends at that moment and then disappears. After the King of the Hunt disappears, the final battle between Geralt and Jacques begins.

Regardless of the player's decision, Jacques' fate is irrelevant as he dies at the end (even if the player chose to spare him). If Geralt saves Jacques from the King of the Hunt, Geralt will inevitably kill Jacques de Aldersberg for the incidents he is responsible for. Jacques, aware that Geralt will kill him, will attempt to save his life while wounded. However, when Geralt is near the Grandmaster, he swings his steel sword at him to end his life. However, Jacques' armor protected him from being impaled by a telekinetic strike, swiping the sword from his hand. This didn't stop Geralt from continuing to kill his enemy and unsheathing his silver sword. Even though Jacques claimed it was a monster sword, Geralt impaled him with his silver sword, overcoming the armor's resistance. In the last moments of his life, he managed to show the White Wolf the dimeritium amulet he gave to Alvin in Act IV.

After Jacques de Aldersberg's death, the vision of the icy wasteland disappears, and Geralt awakens in a monastery near the courtyard of the Order of the Flaming Rose, with the body of the recently slain Jacques de Aldersberg beside him. After Geralt takes all the witchers' secrets for creating witchers from the dead Jacques, the game ends at this point in the company of Dandelion. Optionally, Geralt can also take his dimeritium amulet from him, but this has no bearing on the game's plot.

Regardless of the player's decision, after the Grand Master's death, regardless of which side Geralt joined, the game ends as follows:

  • If Geralt joined the Order, Jacques de Aldersberg would be given a holy funeral, which attracted millions of peasants from Temeria, including King Foltest himself. Despite his gruesome crimes against nonhumans, he is remembered as a supposed hero who saved Vizima from the Scoia'tael Terror, and the Order grows even stronger. Meanwhile, there is growing resentment among the peasants, with new edicts issuing that all elves and dwarves be expelled from Vizima due to the Scoia'tael's actions.
  • If Geralt chooses neither side, Foltest will allow both sides to fight for so long that they will bleed to death. When the conflict ends, the Order, following the Grand Master's death, crumbles within, collapsing, and the flower of elven youth perishes after a bloody battle in the streets of Vizima. This conflict between the two sides weakened Temeria, so Foltest hired skillful diplomats to mend the situation after the uprising, and the sorceress Triss Merigold became his advisor, thanks to which the sorcerers' society gained prominence.
  • If Geralt joined the Scoia'tael, Jacques de Aldersberg's true intentions were revealed after the battle in Vizima. Those who admired the Order began to turn against them, viewing them as new enemies. Foltest, aware of the current situation within the Order, decided to exploit this by cutting them off from influence and then forgave Yaevinn's Scoia'tael fighters for stopping Jacques. Despite Foltest's mercy, he failed to resolve the problems of human intolerance towards nonhumans, so other nonhumans, seeing Yaevinn's exploits, decided to join the Scoia'tael, committing raids and robberies. Despite the help of mages and sorceresses, the racial conflict failed to resolve and resulted in massive losses, but at some point the situation calmed down.
