~ Jadis to Rick.
Tamiel came for the boat things, followed ones who took. Made a better deal.
~ Jadis betraying Rick.

Jadis Stokes, originally born as Anne, is a major antagonist in AMC's The Walking Dead franchise.

She is the leader of The Scavengers who had seemingly teamed up with the series' protagonist Rick Grimes and his faction to aid them in their inevitable conflict against Negan and his own faction, The Saviors.

However, in the Season 7 finale, Jadis and the Scavengers betrayed Rick when they were revealed to have joined forces with Negan against him.

After finding a mortally wounded Rick Grimes on the side of a river, Anne convinces the helicopter to help save him and together, they leave to join the Civic Republic of Philadelphia. Sometime later, Anne separated from Rick and put him under CRM custody. Throughout the years, Anne was devoted to the cause of the Civic Republic where she eventually became a respected member and a warrant officer of the CRM before her death.

History[]

Season 7[]

Its residents (the Scavengers) surround Rick’s group. Rick speaks to a woman that if the survivors are killed, the Saviors will be deprived of their tribute, and come looking for what’s theirs. He asks for her help in fighting the Saviors, but she refuses.

Rick lands in a pit and he’s attacked by a walker covered in spiked armor. He struggles against the walker, piercing his hand and leg on its armor. He dislodges a pile of trash onto the walker, then stabs it with a shard of glass, decapitating it. Jadis throws him some rope.

Rick’s group delivers 63 guns to Jadis. Rosita bristles when Jadis says she needs twice as many guns. Rick insists on keeping 20 guns to help them in their search for more. Jadis agrees.

Jadis leaps up and aims her gun at Rick. Simultaneously, the Scavengers all turn their guns on the Alexandrians. Rick attempts to make another deal with Jadis, but she grazes him in the side and forces him down off the platform. Negan swiftly bargains her down to ten. The fight is hectic, and numerous Saviors and Scavengers are gunned down. Jadis and the Scavengers release smoke bombs and escape in the haze, scaling the walls and running out the gate on foot - fleeing the battle.

Season 8[]

Rick returns to the Junkyard and offers Jadis and her group the chance to allegiances, showing her several Polaroids taken that depict various victories over the Saviors. He threatens to destroy her and the Scavengers if she doesn't join them. Jadis, however still refuses the offer and takes Rick as prisoner, binding him naked in the container that she marks with an A.

After Rick sits in the dark container, Jadis stands outside with a camera. He informs her that his proposed deal still stands. She begins taking pictures of Rick's nude body at different angles. When questioned, she responds that she intends to use the photos as references for a sculpture she plans to create of him, before the container doors are shut again. Rick is forced to his knees, before Jadis and another scavenger present a lightly armored walker as their method to execution. Rick fights off the two Scavengers with the rod used to hold the walker. He then fights off Jadis, who makes several attempts to shoot him, before holding her on the ground in front of the walker's head. The Scavengers surround Rick and he says that he will leave the Junkyard regardless. Jadis silently orders her people to stand down. She allies herself with Rick once more, and they quietly argue over what they will receive after the war before they reach the agreement. Rick leads Jadis and the Scavengers to the outer perimeter of the Sanctuary, where he sees an abandoned garbage truck and no walkers in sight, alarming him.

Jadis and the Scavengers join Rick in checking out the Sanctuary with Jadis commenting that what they see is nothing like the picture Rick showed them. They realize the Saviors are now out when the Saviors open fire to the group, pinning down Rick. Rather than help them, Jadis and the Scavengers flee in their trucks, leaving Rick to be rescued by Carol and Jerry.

In retaliation for the betrayal of the Scavengers, Negan sends Simon to kill to demand an apology and execute one of the Scavengers. Simon additionally demands all of their guns and ammunition which Jadis reluctantly gives up. Simon asks after the origins of the Junkyard, which Jadis insists has always just been a dump. In an attempt to gain an apology, Simon murders Brion and Tamiel in front of Jadis, enraging her to the point that she attacks Simon. Simon orders the Scavengers massacred. Later, when Rick and Michonne arrive, they find the Scavengers all zombified aside from Jadis who alone survives. Jadis, dressed in a white nightgown and speaking in full sentences for once, explains what happens to the Scavengers and her and her people's history. As Rick and Michonne fight their way out, Jadis begs them to come with them but Rick refuses and escaping. Alone, Jadis climbs a hill with a grinder on it and uses a metal pole to draw the zombified Scavengers up the hill. Once they reach the top, the Scavengers enter the grinder and are mushed with Jadis watching as everyone she cares about is crushed into pulp. Once the dead Scavengers are disposed of, Jadis opens a box of long-life applesauce and begins eating from a can, completely alone.

After the fight with Rick, Negan awakens in a vehicle with Jadis, now in a regular outfit, pointing a gun to his head. She gets annoyed with Negan's "well shit" and pistol-whips him with a command of "shut up".

A flashback of Simon's massacre of the Scavengers reveals how Jadis fakes her death by playing possum and escapes unscathed. While Gary notices her apparently dead body, he remarks that she shouldn't have played and spits on her body while Jadis lies motionless. Lying in wait for some time, Jadis gets up and removes her worn and bloodied clothing. In the present, Jadis is living in her quarters, While constantly keeps watch in time, she is crying, packing her possessions and eventually takes Lucille with her to attend to her prisoner Negan. Later, she prepares to burn Lucille in full view of Negan to psychologically hurt him, not knowing that Simon was going against his orders and has her people killed instead of Jadis. While leaving for a brief moment, a tied-up Negan manages to hold his gun, a lit flare and some photos of the Scavengers. When she returns Negan fires a warning shot to an unsuspecting Jadis. Threatening to mutually destroy each other sentimental possessions if she continues her course of action, Negan demands they negotiate. Jadis charges at Negan to disarm the flare threatening her photos. Suddenly, an unidentified helicopter arrives, prompting Jadis to rush another flare in an attempt to hail the vehicle. Unsuccessful to gain the helicopters attention and flies away, she turns the flare to Lucille. Negan pleads for her to spare the bat, and, eventually convincing her that he had not ordered her people dead, swears to make amends for the actions of Simon against the Scavengers. Jadis relents and drops to her knees crying. Afterwards, Jadis reclines while being approached by a released Negan who offers her to come with him to start a new life. Jadis declines and then the duo part on peaceful terms. Jadis goes to her room and lies in bed.

After the war is over, Jadis is visited by Morgan who extends the invitation for her to join Alexandria so she won't have to be alone. Jadis accepts the offer and introduces herself as her real name "Anne" rather than Jadis to Morgan as she had previously known. She is surprised that Morgan chooses to stay in the Junkyard alone, but accepts his decision and leaves.

Season 9[]

During the year and a half that passed since the end of the war, Anne has managed to integrate herself into Rick's core group. Anne and the group go to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., to search for a covered wagon and farming equipment. Inside, Rick tells everyone to be safe and the group separates.

In a hallway, Gabriel drives a machete into a walker's head and leaves it hanging on a human evolution display. He and Anne smile at the irony of this.

Then, Rick thanks Anne for her lead in finding packages of seeds and beans, while she tells Gabriel that she knew of this because she once brought her class back when she was teaching.

Shortly after, the whole group reunites and gingerly uses ropes to drag an old covered wagon down the stairs and over the glass floor. The glass finally gives way and Ezekiel falls through it, dangling by the rope. Before the walkers can bite him, Daryl shoots at one and Rick and the others finally pull him to safety. Carol joyfully kisses him to celebrate.

The group leaves D.C. and prepare to head back to their own communities.

On the road, Rosita and Daryl catch up with everyone to inform them that the main bridge is out due to a storm. Rick tells Tara, Gabriel, Aaron, and Anne to head back to Alexandria and the rest will go to an alternate route and spend the night at the Sanctuary.

At the camp, Anne draws a picture for Gabriel and laments that no one trusts her except him and Rick. Gabriel tells her that at first, no one trusted him either until Rick made it possible. She strokes his hand and thanks him for staying on her side.

When the herd arrive at the labor site and a commotion ensues, Anne arrives with Rick and the others to help.

At night, Anne asks Gabriel who the woman she drew for him was, and he says she was his organist that he loved and lost. She asks him if he is still afraid but is cut short when he kisses her. They smile and start to make out until Gabriel remembers he's supposed to be on watch. Anne replies with "then watch", as she starts to unbuckle his pants.

Later, on the guard post, Anne spots the helicopter from the crane and looks nervous.

At the camp, the Saviors are furious with the news of Justin's death. Alden promises they'll get to the bottom of it but is punched in the face by Jed, who claims he isn't one of them anymore. Carol steps in with her gun at her hip, stopping Jed.

Gabriel defends Anne from Norris as the Saviors start accusing her and Daryl of being the culprits. They grab axes to retaliate when Rick rides in the middle of the group with his gun drawn and warns everyone to back off.

After they disperse, Rick questions Gabriel on where Anne was last night when Justin disappeared. Gabriel vouches for her but Rick instructs him to keep an eye out for her. Later, inside a tent, Gabriel tells Anne about Rick's suspicions and asks if she knows anything about Justin's disappearance, but she denies this asking him if he thinks she is hiding something before leaving

At night, Anne returns to the Junkyard and retrieves a long-range walkie-talkie. She radios the unknown man from the helicopter. He asks her if she has an "A or a B." She asks for an extraction for herself and claims she's paid her dues but the man say for their deal to be on she'll need an A, and she promises them one tomorrow. Suddenly, Gabriel appears behind her and asks who she was talking to and if she had anything to do with Justin.

Anne admits she's been trading people for supplies and she was planning to trade Gabriel and Rick back when she abducted them. She asks him to leave with her to a new place that is much better and is far away, but that he can't tell anyone. Gabriel says he has to tell Rick, but she says, All this time, I thought you were a B, before knocking him out with her walkie.

At the junkyard, Anne kisses a tied up Father Gabriel before rolling up one of her walker experiments to kill him. He wakes up and begs her to stop before telling her he forgives her. She leans the walker over him and then stops, before putting another chloroform rag over his mouth to knock him out.

A while later, Gabriel wakes up untied and alone. He finds a note in his pocket from Anne telling him, If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. I want to go fast.

On the road, Anne's van breaks down and her helicopter contact radios to see if she has the "A." She lies and confirms she does, saying they're ready for transport. Abandoning her vehicle, Anne continues on to the meeting spot on foot.

Later, Anne hears panicked radio calls about Rick apparently blowing himself up to stop a herd at the bridge and Anne spots walkers floating down the nearby river. The helicopter arrives to pick up Anne and her supposed "A" and she pulls out her gun but suddenly spots a wounded Rick on the riverbank, still alive. She quickly radios that she has a "B" but he's strong and needs help immediately. She promises it's not a trick and explains she's just trying to save a friend who once saved her. They agree to her deal and lower the helicopter.

Inside the helicopter, Anne assures Rick that he'll be fine and that "they" will save him. Rick falls asleep as the helicopter flies away into the unknown.

The Ones Who Live[]

In flashbacks, Jadis meets with Rick during his orientation and tour of the Civic Republic after recovering from his wounds. Jadis reveals the details of her people's deal with the CRM and Rick realizes that by trading him, Jadis has been able to avoid going through the 6 year consignment program. Jadis reveals her intention to sign up for the organization, believing in their mission, but Rick wants nothing to do with it or her.

Jadis also meets up with Gabriel outside of Alexandria once a year starting three years before the present. Going by her real name of Anne, she reveals to Gabriel that while she's committed to the CRM's goals, Anne has some doubts and remorse about the amount of people that they've killed along the way to achieve those goals. Anne is unable to help Alexandria after the damage that the Whisperers inflict upon it and considers killing Gabriel as a loose end. However, Anne can't bring herself to do it which Gabriel uses as proof that she's still a good person inside. Gabriel believes that Anne never truly left the home that she had made with the Alexandrians.

In the present, still a CRM Warrant Officer, Jadis confronts Rick when Michonne shows up. Jadis covers up her knowledge of Michonne's true identity and nature as an "A," but refuses to do more than that and threatens to destroy Alexandria should Rick and Michonne escape together. In order to ensure that Rick won't simply kill her, Jadis has placed a dossier among her belongings that will lead the CRM to Alexandria should anything happen to her. Jadis admits that she had never believed that Rick could escape on his own so she had never tried to stop him, but Jadis knows that Rick and Michonne together can do anything.

After Rick helps Michonne to escape - although it's later revealed that she didn't actually go - he enlists Jadis' help to cover it up. As Rick is planning to stay with the CRM, Jadis reluctantly agrees to help him. Later, Jadis arrives at Cascadia Forward Operating Base and tells Rick that she is going to be headquartered there through the upcoming leadership summit and beyond. After making a pass at Rick, Jadis notes that Michonne hasn't seen her yet, only to have Michonne spot Jadis seconds later, causing an amused Jadis to make an amused quip.

After Michonne makes a daring mid-air escape with him on the way back to the Civic Republic, Rick tells Michonne how Jadis had taken him after finding Rick after the bridge explosion and the danger that she poses to Alexandria if they escape. Rick doesn't see any way out of the situation since Jadis has ensured that their home will be destroyed if they kill her, but the two discover that the storm that they were flying through had crashed the CRM helicopter that Rick and Michonne were flying in, meaning that Jadis and the CRM will believe them to be dead. A CRM helicopter - later revealed to contain Jadis and a Reclamation Team - investigates and bombs the wreckage of the crashed helicopter in order to erase any evidence of the CRM's existence, causing Greenwood to collapse. Michonne eventually convinces Rick to take the chance to go home as everyone will believe them to be dead in the crash and thus there is no further threat to Alexandria.

While spending the night in Yellowstone National Park, Rick and Michonne are found by Jadis who reveals that she had been suspicious of their "deaths" in the crash and had returned to Greenwood alone to investigate. Jadis had found a yellow truck that she had noticed from the helicopter parked nearby gone and a trail of clues leading to Rick and Michonne. Rick and Michonne escape, severely wounding Jadis with a hatchet, and engage in a game of cat-and-mouse with her, hampered by their inability to kill Jadis without first finding out the location of her dossier. Noticing Jadis' uncomfortable reaction to her real name of Anne, Rick expresses a belief that Anne, the kind artist who had lived in Alexandria following the massacre of her people, might still be inside of Jadis somewhere, although he agrees to torture her for information if Jadis can't be reasoned with.

In a final confrontation with Rick and Michonne, Jadis reveals that before their escape, Rick had earned the trust of Major General Beale who had intended to give Rick the Echelon Briefing and reveal all of the CRM's secrets to him. The three strike a deal where Rick will return to the CRM with Jadis while Michonne is allowed to go home, but Jadis double-crosses them, believing that Rick is too dangerous to be kept alive. Having anticipated this, Michonne ambushes Jadis in turn, leading to a standoff until walkers attack. Severely wounded and caught by surprise, Jadis falls to the walkers and is fatally bitten in the side of the neck before Rick and Michonne can dispatch them.

Dying, Jadis explains to her former friends that, having lost her people, she had dedicated herself to a cause that seemed like it would be long lasting. However, Jadis had found herself caught between being Anne and Jadis - the artist and the ruthless Warrant Officer of the Civic Republic Military, the Alexandrian and the CRM officer - and Jadis couldn't bring herself to lose either of her communities after what had happened to her people. Deciding to die as Anne rather than as Jadis, she tells Rick and Michonne where to find her dossier in Cascadia Base so that they can destroy it and go home. More sympathetic after hearing Anne's side of things, Michonne tells her that she and Rick will be returning to the CRM so that Rick can get the Echelon Briefing and they can help the Civic Republic stop its military and their extreme actions. Anne gives Rick a wedding ring that Gabriel had found for him to use with Michonne and, at peace at last, asks Rick to kill her so as to end her suffering. Rick shoots Anne in the head with her own pistol, killing her, but Rick and Michonne both have to look away, unable to bring themselves to watch as the woman who was both friend and foe to them over the years dies.

When Anne doesn't show up to their yearly meeting, a heartbroken Gabriel realizes that she's dead and crafts a makeshift grave marker for her. Rick and Michonne steal Anne's helicopter to return to Cascadia Base to find and destroy the dossier and stop the CRM once and for all.

In Anne's room, Michonne discovers that she had continued her passion as an artist, even as a loyal soldier of the CRM, creating a number of paintings and sculptures, including at least one painting of Gabriel. Hidden inside of one of Anne's sculptures, Michonne finds her dossier which describes the true threat posed by Rick, Michonne and Alexandria, urging the CRM to kill the couple and destroy the community. Michonne destroys the dossier, ensuring their home's survival.
