Jaina: Once before, you and I stood side by side on the slopes of Mount Hyjal. That World Tree did not fall, because The Alliance and The Horde worked together. Thrall: Horde... Alliance... We've come to this crossroads again and again Jaina. It always falls apart... What's different this time?
Jaina: We are.

~ Jaina, shortly after the Bombing of Theramore.
Jaina Proudmoore is one of the main protagonists of the Warcraft franchise, serving as one of the main protagonists of The Alliance. She is the Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras and one of the most powerful archmages and significant Humans in the history of Azeroth. Jaina was originally benevolent woman who was filled with compassion, and always sought to ensure peace between the Alliance & the Horde, even siding against her fanatical father, who was launching unprovoked attacks on Orgrimmar. She would then remain one of the main heroes of The Alliance and was always a defender of trying to establish and keep peace with The Horde. Jaina would suffer many tragic events through the course of her life, but she would always remain steadfast and optimistic.
Sadly, after the Bombing of Theramore during the events of Mists of Pandaria, Jaina finally snapped as this was one tragedy too many for her to bear. Consumed by revenge and her psyche shattered, she plotted war crimes and mass destruction against The Horde and even came dangerously close to committing them. She would nonetheless allow herself to be convinced that her actions were wrong, and, for a time, would begin calming down, but her hate for the Horde was renuviated after the Sunreavers betrayed her, which would lead to the Purge of Dalaran. After Garrosh's defeat, it would take a significant amount of time for Jaina to recover her mental state, only for her to once more have to endure yet even more tragedies and fall to rage, sadness and bitterness, which would start gradually abating during the Fourth War. It wasn't until the events leading up to Shadowlands and afterwards that she was finally able to let go of the anger and sadness that plagued her for so long and finally start truly healing.
She is voiced by Carrie Gordon Lowrey in Warcraft III, and Laura Bailey in subsequent appearances.
After an attack led by Acting Warchief Garrosh Hellscream caused the destruction of Theramore, Jaina was driven temporarily insane by the mana residue and trauma. As a result she proceeds to try and use the Focusing Iris, the arcane artifact used to power Garrosh's mana-bomb, to flood Orgrimmar and kill everybody in the city. She is talked out of it at the last minute by Thrall and Kalecgos, the latter of which convinced her that she was behaving exactly like Garrosh and Arthas. Though she stays her hand, she still severs her friendship with Thrall, considering him partially responsible for the tragedy, as he didn't replace Garrosh despite knowing of his hatred for the Alliance.
Her rage now contained and to make up for the atrocity she was about to commit, she rejoins the Kirin Tor as an apprentice, but is made its new leader, replacing Rhonin. Soon thereafter, she finds herself forced to purge Dalaran of the Horde, as Dalaran's portals were used by the Blood Elves to by-pass her wards around Darnassus and acquire the Divine Bell. As such, she fully pledges Dalaran to the Alliance again, and has since then acquired a much harsher view on the Horde, even going as far as advising Varian to not "go soft on them."
Once Garrosh is defeated by Adventurers and the Horde pick a new Warchief, Jaina tried to convince Varian to dismantle the Horde (which is sometimes misinterpreted as her wanting to kill the Horde leaders), so that the Alliance could watch over them and prevent any future conflicts, Varian however disagreed and chose to trust the Horde to uphold their honor.
Luckily in the novel, War Crimes Jaina let go of much of her hate and stated that Garrosh should not represent all orcs since most orcs tried their hardest to amend for their misdeeds. After being injured and nearly killed, Thrall, looks upon Jaina, hoping for her to be saved. Chi-Ji is able to rescue her and Jaina forgives Thrall. However, it is still shown in Warlords of Draenor that she still doesn't fully trust the Horde and says she'll keep her eyes on them.
In Legion, her rage returns back after the loss of several members and the death of Varian Wrynn at the broken shore, which she blames on the Horde for abandoning them from a keypoint position which left the Alliance severely exposed (while in return, the Horde was forced to retreat after their Warchief Vol'jin was mortally wounded, which the Alliance however didn't know about, hence the confusion). When Khadgar comes to Dalaran to initiate a vote to allow the Horde back in, Jaina will immediately refuse and votes against it, but loses as Khadgar's side is given more votes. In a fit of rage, she eventually resigns herself from the Kirin Tor, wanting nothing to do with the Horde, not to be seen again for the rest of the expansion.
She returns in Battle for Azeroth.
Personality[]
Jaina had a reputation for being a beacon of kindness and compassion within The Alliance. Harboring hatred for violence of any kind, Jaina would much rather try and find peaceful resolutions to conflicts and was by far the most vocal proponent of trying to maintain peaceful relations between The Alliance and The Horde. Throughout the Third War, she was able to build a lasting friendship with Thrall which helped both sides in their attempts to avoid their factions from going to all out war. She was always happy to help and had a positive and optimistic spark despite trying times.
Despite this, Jaina's life has had many tragedies, and while she tried to remain hopeful and kind, it would slowly begin taking its toll on her. By the time of Wrath of The Lich King, Jaina desperately tried to find any shred left of Arthas' humanity, as well as started to become somewhat concerned over Garrosh Hellscream. Still, she remained a stalwart friend of Thrall despite this. Leading up to the Cataclysm, Jaina once again served as the advocate of peace between both factions as tensions began to become increasingly strained. While her forces at Theramore worked to establish a foothold in Horde territory, Jaina herself did not directly have any hand in the fighting.
It wouldn't be until the events of Mists of Pandaria that Jaina, after trying so hard to keep the peace and remain a friend to The Horde, would completely and utterly snap. Garrosh's destruction of Theramore shattered her psyche altogether, and her warmth and compassion was instead replaced with vengeance and hatred. Her disgust and wrath towards The Horde reached such enraged lengths that she was willing to commit war crimes and genocide against them (though that happened in the immidiate aftermath of Theramore, when she was in shock and her feelings were exacerbated by the bomb's arcane energie), at one point even coming dangerously close to destroying the Orc capital Orgimmar and killing everyone within it. Even after Garrosh's defeat, Jaina firmly believed The Horde remained the greatest threat to The Alliance and urged Varian to dismantle the Horde once and for all, something Varian refused. While her hatred and contempt for them would lessen slightly during Garrosh's trial, it wouldn't be until The Burning Legion's third invasion that Jaina was finally able to start moving on from this mindset, working together with The Horde, although very wearily, to defend Azeroth. Sadly, Sylvanas' treachery and The Fourth War would derail this, forcing her back into a defensive and hostile, bitter enemy of The Horde once more. This mentality would remain, and even worsen prior to the war, as her feelings of quilt and shame made her believe that it was primarily she who was responsible for the Horde's many crimes.
Quotes[]
“
All I ever wanted to do was study.
„
~ One of Jaina's most famous quotes.
“
Never forget Theramore.
„
~ Jaina after the destruction of Theramore.
“
My father once told me that peace was like a dream... Beautiful. Ephemeral. Unattainable. I didn't listen. No one listened. We've made kindling from our suffering. Stirred the embers of resentment. Just waiting for a single spark to set the whole world aflame. As the Alliance returns to forgotten kingdoms, the Horde seeks the might of an ancient empire. We cannot dream any longer. The time has come to call on allies willing to join the fight. To rally beneath the banners of a world at war.
