Son of a bitch!
~ Sawyer
Same thing I've always done Kate. Surviving.
~ Sawyer to Kate Austen.

James Ford, better known under the pseudonym Sawyer, is a major character in the ABC television series Lost.

At first, nobody liked Sawyer due to his antagonistic personality, selfishness, machismo, and rude nicknames he would give to other survivors. Bordering an anti-hero/anti-villain for most of the series, by Season 4, he started to conduct more heroic acts, his elements became more apparent the more time he had spent on the island, unleashing the goodness Sawyer had in him.

He was portrayed by Josh Holloway.

Biography[]

Past[]

Sawyer was born in Jasper, Alabama in 1968 to Mary Ford and an unnamed father. When Sawyer was eight years old, his mother met a man who she had an affair with and scammed her out of 38,000 dollars. When Sawyer's father found out, he was furious. Mary took Sawyer and told him to hide under his bed, Sawyer's father then killed his mother, then sat down on Sawyer's bed with him under it. He took some time and then turned the gun on himself. Sawyer found out that the man who caused all this to happen went under the name "Sawyer" thus, adopting the name for himself.

After his parent's funeral, he sat down on some steps and wrote a note. It was directed to his parents killer, swearing that one day he will find him. Sawyer's uncle then came up to him and saw what he was writing, his uncle then had a chat with him telling him "what's done is done." His uncle then made him promise that he wouldn't finish the letter, which Sawyer swore upon.

In the 9th grade, Sawyer dropped out of school, by the time he was 19 he was in 6,000 dollars in debt. As a way to make money, Sawyer became a con man and had officially taken the name of his nemesis. Sawyer became the man he swore to hunt down.

In his life as a con artist, Sawyer was successful in conning a couple out of 160,000 dollars, but upon discovering that they had a young son, Sawyer stopped and walked away. Sawyer drew the line of harming children in his cons. Sawyer had felt guilty after seeing the boy and couldn't go through with it. Later, Sawyer found another victim, Cassidy, and decided to pull off a long con. She saw through his tricks and took her in as an apprentice, teaching all there is about conning. Sawyer still went through with the long con and the entire time her and Sawyer were together, he was getting one step closer to scam her out of her money. Sawyer became fond of Cassidy and thought about ending the scam, but his partner in the con threatened her life when Sawyer told him this. Cassidy gave him up to the authorities.

Sawyer ended up getting 7 years and 9 months in jail. Cassidy would visit him from time to time, eventually revealing she gave birth to his child. After spending around a year in jail, the warden offered to excuse the next 6 years of his prison sentence for conning another prisoner into revealing where he had stashed some stolen money. Once the con was complete, he deposited the money anonymously into a bank account for his daughter Clementine. After he was released, he decided to take on a job called the "Tampa job".

A past associate of Sawyer named Hibbs gave Sawyer intel that the real Sawyer was hiding out in Australia. He said the person's name was Frank Duckett and lived in Sydney. Sawyer traveled to Australia to find his parents' killer. While in a bar, Sawyer met a man named Christian Shepherd. The two had a long talk, Shephard talked about his son and how he was proud of him, he also encouraged Sawyer about the work he came to do. These words motivated Sawyer to keep going through with it. Sawyer met Duckett and shot him, turns out that Hibbs got the wrong person and Duckett was innocent. Sawyer realized that Hibbs tricked him, so Sawyer ran.

Later, Sawyer got into a bar fight with the Australian Minister of Agriculture, Fishing, and Forestry, resulting in them being arrested. The police arranged for Sawyer to be deported and put on a flight that would change his life forever.

Personality[]

In the early stages of the show, Sawyer acted aggressive, sarcastic, and self-absorbed. People referred to him as a "redneck asshole" based on his southern accent and attitude, he was a greedy hoarder who looted the dead bodies on the crash site, then kept it to himself. Things like pornographic magazines and luxuries such as whiskey, clothes, toiletries, sunscreen, and eventually a large stash of weapons. He made a bad reputation for himself on purpose, doing things like insulting others and sharing his racist views toward his parents who he blamed for the crash. His arrogance and machismo caused people who even tried to get along with him to hate him. Sawyer did not see the people around him as equals, he saw them as pawns who he wanted leverage of power over. His rebellion made his own life hell, after being accused of stealing an inhaler from Shannon who needed it. Sawyer has a mask on, he treats everyone like dogshit because he wants to hide his pain and past trauma, in other words, he does this because he doesn't want to get close with others.

Sawyer was tortured by Sayid against Sayid's will, he had to torture Sawyer just up he could give up the inhalers. Sawyer used his skill in manipulation to tell Sayid that he would only tell Kate where the inhaler was, Sawyer took advantage of Kate by making her kiss him to give up the inhaler, which he didn't have. He showed extreme patience and persistence, all he wanted from Kate was a kiss and it took him a brutal torture session to get it. He always gets what he wants no matter the circumstance.

He is greedy as he is selfish. After discovering the stash of guns in the bunker, Sawyer wanted complete control over the armory and medicine. So he staged an attack on Sun, he manipulated Charlie, who had recently been humiliated by John Locke, to attack Sun and stage it as an attempted kidnapping by one of The Others. After making everyone uneasy, Sawyer manipulated Locke and Jack into thinking there was an incoming attack, then in an opening, he found where the stash of guns was hidden. When Locke and Jack were arguing about the guns. Sawyer took them and hid them in a place where only he knew. He said that he was mad about Jack going through his hidden stash of items, taking his shaving cream, batteries, and beer. So Sawyer in an act of revenge took hold of the entire medical and weapons stash for himself, with the help of Charlie.

After being kidnapped by The Others and taken hostage. Sawyer started to change, he hated working with others but was forced to when he had to escape. During his time in captivity, Sawyer kept causing trouble. He got in trouble for kissing Kate when he expressed his feelings about her, he then got into a brawl and took down 2 men before being punched and pulling a gun. To prevent Sawyer from causing trouble, Benjamin Linus "injected" a pacemaker into Sawyer, saying that if his heart went above 140 his heart would explode. This provoked fear in Sawyer, causing him to be more cautious about his actions, while receiving a beating from Danny Pickett, Sawyer didn't fight back since he was under the impression he was going to die if his heart rate went over 140. Upon realizing he had been fooled, Ben also revealed that he was being held captive on a separate island. Sawyer withheld this information from Kate, Sawyer didn't want Kate to risk her life trying to escape because he deeply cared for her. Showing his elements as a caring lover. After being able to escape Sawyer changed, he started to get along better with other survivors and bonded with Hurley, Jin, and Charlie when they discovered a working car.

By Season 4, Sawyer developed more heroic actions. Starting to become more of a leader than an asshole. Performing heroic acts on the island and watching out for the group. When being taken to the freighter, the helicopter the survivors were on was losing fuel and needed less weight to preserve it, Sawyer did a selfless act and jumped out of the helicopter to make sure his friends had a chance of surviving. After swimming back to shore and seeing the freighter in the distance light up in flames, Sawyer looked devastated When Benjamin Linus moved the island, and the time skips started to happen, transporting the group of survivors back and forward through time Sawyer and the other survivors were attacked by flaming arrows, after showing remorse and regret Sawyer grouped up whatever survivors left and went on. After the time skips stopped, the island was trapped in the 1970s, Sawyer met the Dharma Initiative. They offered Sawyer and his group passage back to the mainland, Sawyer thinking that they could be missing something decides to stay a little while.

This eventually turns into three years, Sawyer saw that his life had meaning in the Dharma Initiative, unlike his previous life as a con man. When he was in danger almost all the time. When his wife, Juliet died, Sawyer blamed jack for this. Causing him to share a big grudge against Jack and trying to kill him. In an act of spite Sawyer reflects on his regrets and blames himself for not being able to save her. He then makes up his mind and wants to leave the island, teaming up with The Man In Black. Sawyer betrays The Man In Black and helps everyone get on a submarine. But The Man In Black planted a bomb in Jack's backpack. Sawyer tried to stop the bomb but he was stopped by Jack. Jack said that The Man In Black couldn't kill them and he wanted the survivors to kill each other, Sawyer not buying a word Jack says due to his stubbornness and ignorance pulls the wires off the bomb and causes the deaths of Sun, Jin, and Sayid.
