~ James lamenting his behavior towards Charlie. |
James is one of the two main antagonists (alongside the IGBG CEO) of the Smiling Friends episode "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director's Cut)".
He is voiced by Michael Cusack, who also voices Mr. Frog, Rex, and Grim in the same series.
Appearance[]
James is a physically imposing man with large muscles, a bald head, and red eyes with black circles around them. He wears a dark grey shirt with a skull on it, a black belt with a peace sign buckle, red pants, and black shoes that curl up in the front.
Personality[]
James is an extremely unpleasant person, acting aggressive and hostile to everyone around him. He has no respect for other people's boundaries or possessions, as he barges into the Smiling Friends building and immediately begins breaking things and ordering Charlie around. His behavior is somewhat similar to that of a spoiled child, such as how he destroys the break room TV because it isn't a flatscreen, and forces Charlie to make him a casserole, only to throw it against the wall because he now wants McDonald's.
While it initially appears that James is only claiming to be depressed in order to take advantage of Smiling Friends, it is revealed at the end that he is legitimately suffering from some sort of emotional problems, and feels remorse for driving Charlie away with his behavior in his depressing apartment.
It is unclear whether James' feelings towards Charlie are romantic in nature, if he just wanted to be his friend, or if he saw him as his only opportunity to change and become happy. This, along with his belt buckle and the fact that a poster of a kitten can be seen in his room, hint at a softer side.
Biography[]
James barges into the Smiling Friends headquarters and immediately begins rooting through the cabinets. After Charlie explains to him that the company is a charity that helps people smile, James claims to be depressed and suggests that maybe if Charlie gets him a glass of milk he'll be happy. Noticing that the television is not a flatscreen, James rips it off the wall and throws it against the refrigerator. When Charlie gives James the milk he asked for, James says he hates milk and breaks the glass, and then demands that Charlie clean up the mess on the floor. Charlie protests, but James presents the building's plaque, which he ripped off the wall, that states that the Smiling Friends must do whatever the client wants until they smile.
Later, Charlie is made to wear a French maid outfit and has baked a casserole for James in hopes of making him smile. James throws the casserole against the wall and demands McDonald's instead. Charlie makes an impassioned plea to James, but this falls on deaf ears as James tears Charlie's nose off because he found it distracting. Charlie calls to seek medical attention, with James mocking everything he's saying all the while. James then swats the phone out of his hand and threatens to cut Charlie's head off if its the only thing that makes him smile. Luckily for Charlie, however, James is distracted by the IGBG CEO and Troglor, who have chased Gwimbly, Pim, and Alan into the Smiling Friends building. James angers the CEO by calling him a "fat ugly nerd," and the CEO orders Troglor to shoot him, but James kills the CEO by stabbing him in the head. James smiles, claiming "that's all I needed," and departs.
In the post-credits sequence, James is seen drinking beer in a run-down apartment and crying over a picture of Charlie, expressing remorse for driving away the one person who cared about him.

Trivia[]
- A man who looks similar to James appears in the Halloween special in Season 1 as one of the people who beats the Forest Demon to death. It is unknown if this is the same character and he was redesigned for his second appearance, or if they are two separate people.
- Him forcing Charlie to dress in a French maid outfit while ordering him around is a possible reference to the SpongeBob SquarePants episode, "Can You Spare a Dime?" in which Squidward does the same to SpongeBob.
- Early in the episode, Gwimbly fulfills a paid video request for somebody named James. It is unknown if it is the same James or not. Aditionally, the request also included Gwimbly to "tell Tyler to go to hell", which could also be the same Tyler who appeared in the Season's seventh episode and was fired from the company.
- James could be in many ways considered a darker counterpart to Desmond, the client of the series' pilot episode. Not only do they both have similar facial designs but they are also shown to be depressed and lonely, with the episode's concluding with them finally smiling after killing something. The main difference is that, while Desmond's depression drove him to become suicidal and self-loathing, James instead chooses to take out his frustrations by harming and bullying other people.
