James Coleman is one of the main antagonists of the Netflix original series Great Pretender. He is an art appraiser and critic who uses his relationship with a wealthy woman named Farrah Brown to accrue a personal collection of art. He is the main antagonist of the Snow of London case and an anti-hero in the Wizard of Far East case.
He was voiced by Yoshito Yasuhara in the Japanese version and by Trevor Devall in the English version.
Biography[]
Not much is known about James' background, but he meets Cynthia and her lover Thomas Meyer and tells that he has a talent for forgery. James proposes that Thomas becomes a forger for him, which he agrees to. However, Thomas spends less time with Cynthia. Because of Thomas' work, James gained the name James Bond of the Art World. James rented out a special studio for Thomas to continue his forgery work. He also tells Thomas that Cynthia is a distraction. But after Thomas sees his paintings in an museum, he cuts all ties with James.
When Makoto returns to the sushi restaurant to apologize to the head chef, he sees a critic named James Coleman criticizing the chef's food and walks out, forcing the chef to give up and return to China. After finding out about the boarding house is in debt and will closing soon, Makoto calls Cynthia for a favor. He then sees the critic and overhears him talking to his lover on the phone. James goes to an art gallery and browses through the available selections. While not looking, Makoto swaps the prices. James complains to the employee that the prices are rip off and leaves. Makoto signals Cynthia, Abby to move in an another art gallery while Kudo ushers the employee. Cynthia and Abby bring a painting and disguise themselves as employees. Abby shows him a painting and agrees to buy it for twenty five thousand euros. Cynthia warns Makoto about the critic being the world's best art appraiser and has a history with him. He is later seen on TV giving an interview about the painting he bought. He find the price so low and criticizes that people don't value it. James then becomes the team's new target.
At an auction house, James sells a painting called "Portrait of a Woman" made painted by Edward Cain to a woman named Farrah Brown. After the auction, Abby approaches James and offers to work with him but declines as his lover is already his business partner. Makoto and Kudo disguised themselves as gardeners and plant a wiretapping device in Farrah's estate. It's revealed that James and Farrah are lovers and worked together to collect famous paintings, which was James' plan. In their private art room, Farrah suggests James should include the Snow of London painting to their collection. At the auction house, Abby runs to James for help that a certain man (Laurent) is stalking her. He tells her he'll have security watching him before leaving for the auction. The auction begins with the Snow of London painting. A bidding war between Laurent and Farrah is had. After Laurent wins the bidding for thirty-million dollars, James yells at Farrah for her failure and always listen to him. He then runs into Abby and hires her to gain Laurent's trust.
Abby informs James about Laurent being an art dealer and works in the black market, buying art and sells them to the mafia. James praises Abby for her work. On the streets of London, James confronts Laurent about the Snow of London. Laurent then invites James to an private auction.
The following day, James receives an invitation from Laurent and is confident that Farrah will win the auction at any cost. James and Farrah arrived at the auction and shown to be disgusted with the other auctioneers. While Farrah overhears Kudo and Shi-Won that the Snow of London painting and contacts her butler, Cynthia takes her seat and goes into a bidding war against James and taunts him, eventually, making him very furious. James manages to win the Snow of London for one-hundred million dollars and uses his money to pay for it when he is unable to use Farrah's money. After selling everything in his name, he begs Farrah to buy the painting and gets his head stuck to the gate.
At the Suzaku building, when Kudo and his team dressed as a SWAT team and claims that Akemi Suazku is suspicion of human trafficking, Makoto protects her and summons a group thugs lead by Eddie Cassano himself, who reveals that the trial found him innocent because of his bribery. This led Makoto in a confrontation with his father Seiji Ozaki, who takes the knife and slashes his chest, killing him in the process. Cassano’s men and Kudo’s team fire off their guns and Liu and Suzuaku’s men escape. They returned to the office only to find it empty. Akemi sees a lever and pulls it, the floor descends to the ground and a set of doors revealing they were on a deserted island and the building started to collapse. In a flashback where it is revealed that Cassano, Sam Ibrahim, and Coleman were contacted by Makoto to help him with his “plan”, where they prepared an upcoming meeting with Akemi on an abandoned island. The shootout revealed the Team Confidence and Cassano’s men shooting off their guns in the air and later the team are holding a celebration on Cassano’s boat.
