James Earl Dean is the main antagonist of the Justified episode "The Moonshine War". He is a convicted sex offender who works for the Bennett family as a marijuana grower, only to become the subject of a US marshal investigation.
He is portrayed by Billy Miller.
Biography[]
Dean was convicted of statutory rape some time prior to the episode. Upon being paroled he immediately propositioned a teenage girl, for which the US marshals were sent after him. Despite this he was hired by Doyle and Coover Bennett, who were unaware of his history.
Dean first appears in the episode approaching Loretta McCready, a teenage girl harvesting weed from the Bennetts. Loretta, who has been harassed by Dean before, reminds him that her father told him to stay away. When he refuses to leave her alone and makes inappropriate comments about her, she punches him in the face and runs away. Dean pursues her but runs into a booby trap and is stabbed in the face by broken glass. Loretta's father Walt then calls the marshals and reports that Dean is working for the Bennetts.
Dean is treated for his injuries by Dickie Bennett and vows revenge against Loretta. He goes round to her house later that day and drags her into his car. The marshals begin searching for the car and discover that it's been spotted at a nearby petrol station. US marshals Raylan Givens and Rachel Brooks are sent to investigate and immediately run into Dean, who Raylan sprays with petrol. Dean pulls his gun only for Raylan to tell him that if he fires the spark will ignite the petrol and kill him. Defeated, Dean drops his gun and is arrested by the marshals.
