James Grant is a supporting antagonist in the Chicago PD episode "Prison Ball".
Background[]
It is mentioned that James was very close to his uncle Devon Tucker who took care of him from a very young age. James would become a good basketball player in Anderson high school to the point he was a star on the team. He was due to have a scholarship and endorsement deals. However, James followed in his uncle's footsteps as a criminal and become a delinquent. Prior to his debut, he would be put on trial for robbing a store, with the only witness being a 10-year-old girl named Maya Watkins. He notified his uncle Devon, who was in prison on charges federal arms traffickers, of his situation and the latter got him in contact with his former cellmate Omar Martel, who was acting as a hitman. With no hesitation, James ordered the murder of the girl.
Prison Ball[]
Martel carried out the murder, shooting Watkins in the head, with her body being found on the streets by a gathered crowd. James was advised by his uncle to keep a low profile and wait for the charges to be dropped. However, suspicion fell on James, due to Watkins being a witness in his crime but he revealed he had an alibi at the time, and it was verified. He would be brought in to the 21st District where he ran into Maya's mother who attacked James for getting her killed before they were separated by officers. He would be interrogated with his lawyer present, and it was made apparent that Voight knew he was involved in the murder and will be arrested for it.
Eventually, CPD learned about Martel and went to his house, entering by force, where they proceed to arrest him and charged him with the murder of Maya Watkins. Likewise, an undercover Kevin Atwater was able to get Tucker to confess to helping his nephew in facilitating the murder and confirm James' guilt in the robbery. A cuffed James was brought in, while being escorted to the transport van, he was taunted by Det. Alvin Olinsky on what prison life he would be facing, with him saying nothing in response as he is taken away.
Ultimately, James is convicted of the robbery and murder facilitation.
