James Kim is the main antagonist of the 2012 South Korean disaster movie Deranged.

He was portrayed by Lee Hyung-chul.

Biography[]

James Kim is a trade man and the CEO of BronStar, who bought a pharmaceutical company named Joa Pharmaceutical five years before the events of the movie. Upon taking control of it, Kim immediately dismantled the R&D department and stopped the researches who were developing a cure to rare neurological diseases. However, Kim wanted more profit, so he planned to start an epidemy. Therefore he conspired with the head of the scientist researchers, one of his classmates.

Five years later, Kim and the head scientist researcher manipulated the other scientists to make out profit from their former researches. They all agree. So, they release mutant horsehair worms at the state of larvae into lakes. The larvae penetrate the bodies of bathers either orally or anally. They then attached themselves to the organs until maturity. Infected people feed them involuntarily, providing them with nutrients from the food they eat. When they reach the reproductive stage, the horsehair worms give their hosts an uncontrolled urge to drink. As a result, the victim jumps into the water. At this point, the worms leave the body. Since they leave at the same time, the victim dies of shock and shows signs of severe malnutrition.

In the same time, the scientists from Joa developed a cure put into the market as a normal vermicide, naming it Windazole, and bought the company’ shares. The head scientist poses as a victim himself and claims to have been cured by Windazole, while showing the product to hospital staff. The government immediately contacts Kim and demands an increase in Windazole production. However, it has been put out of the market due to poor sales. Kim nevertheless promises to reactivate the production.

Later, Kim explains that they unfortunately cannot start the production because their machinery are outdated and they had an overload when they tried to produce Windazole. The government asks him to reveal the chemical composition of the product, but Kim refuses because it is not expired yet. Kim adds that even if he accepts, the production would not start before a week because they need to allocate the adequate resources and bypass legal procedures. The government assures him they will support him generously if he cooperates and persuades the board to accept. However, they threaten to investigate the company with auditors and possibly shut it down if he refuses, must to his dismay. Kim resigns himself to talk with the shareholders.

Later, Kim comes back and announces to the government that they rejected the offer. The members are outraged, but Kim suddenly proposes that the government should buy over the company with the price the investors want. After hesitation, the government reluctantly accepts and Kim sets the price to five billions of won.

In the meantime, Kim sends the head scientist burn a warehouse containing the crude product and kill a scientist who have denounced them to the cops.

The next day, Kim goes to sign the contract, but at the last moment, the government is informed of his responsibility in the releasing of the horsehair worms. Kim is then seen arrested and assaulted by people angry at him for causing a big amount of death just for profit.

Personality[]

Kim is a typically evil, greedy, and psychopathic businessman and has no remorse to condemn a whole nation just to be more rich. In public, Kim is polite and reassuring with people but this is just a mask to hide the selfish and callous person he is.
