Villain Overview

~ James' most repeated phrase.

James Lincoln Fields, credited as just James, is the main antagonist of the 2018 horror film Open 24 Hours. He is a prolific serial killer nicknamed The Rain Ripper and the evil ex-boyfriend of the main protagonist of the film, Mary.

He was portrayed mainly by Cole Vigue, while Arsha Aghdasi portrayed him for stunts.

Biography[]

While little is known of James' background, he is mentioned to have been a serial killer who had murdered thirty women before the events of the film. His motives mostly remain a mystery, though Mary mentions it had something to do with "purifying their souls", which is why he struck during rainfall. If Mary's hallucinations are anything to go by, his murder methods were drowning his victims' face in a bathtub while striking them repeatedly in the head with a hammer. It remains unclear how James and Mary got together, but they did, and Mary was oblivious to her boyfriend's crimes. Eventually, she did find out after following a horrific smell into the flooded basement and discovering one of the corpses floating.

Unfortunately, James saw her find the body and threatened to kill her and whole family if she ever told or left him. Scared and unsure what to do, Mary stayed silent, but James started making her watch as he killed. It wasn't until James killed an eighteen year old girl named Christine Rogers, that Mary finally had enough. She set the house on fire while he was asleep, intending to kill herself and James. However, both of them survived, but James' crimes were uncovered and he was imprisoned. Mary was also imprisoned for the arson and demonized by everyone for her inaction, with the media even dubbing her "The Watcher."

Open 24 Hours[]

Years later, Mary is paroled, but highly unstable, hallucinating James and the victims she failed to save. She applies for a job working the graveyard shift at a gas station, as it was recommended to her by her parole officer, Tom Doogan.

Victims[]

  • 0-34: Unnamed Women - Killed prior to the events of the film.
  • 35: Christine Rogers - Killed prior to the events of the film, but shown being bludgeoned in a hallucination.
  • 36: Tom Doogan - Head pulverized with a sledgehammer.
  • 37: Debbie Boyd - Suffocated with a plastic bag.
  • 38: Trucker - Stabbed in the neck with a hammer, accidentally shot by Mary.
  • 39: Bobby - Bludgeoned with a sledgehammer.
  • 40: Officer Collins - Shot in the head with a shotgun.

Trivia[]

  • James' theme appears to be "Raindrops" by Dee Clark, as Mary mentions he would play it before every murder. It also plays at the beginning of the movie, and in Mary's first hallucination.
  • James' outfit and mannerisms might've been inspired by The Fisherman from I Know What You Did Last Summer, as the way he drags away Debbie, is very similar to the way The Fisherman drags away his victims with his hook.
