James Quinlan

Sir James Quinlan is a minor antagonist in the Doctor Who story "The Ambassadors of Death".

He was portrayed by the late Dallas Cavell, who also played Trask in "The Highlanders".

Biography[]

Sir James Quinlan was a British civil servant with responsibility for the space programme. He was informed by General Carrington that he had made contact with a group of radioactive aliens while on the Mars Probe 6 mission. Eager for the political capital of being the first person to arrange contact with an alien species, Quinlan arranged with Carrington to have the three astronauts from the Mars Probe 7 and Recovery 7 missions exchanged for three alien ambassadors, who travelled to Earth using their craft and spacesuits. This was done without the foreknowledge of either the astronauts or the Space Centre. The plan was for Carrington to recover the capsule and move it to a safe location, but the Doctor derailed things by managing to get the capsule to the Space Centre.

Quinlan gave sanctuary to Bruno Taltalian, who had been caught trying to stop the Doctor decoding Carrington's conversations with the aliens. He fobbed off the Doctor, Liz and the Brigadier when they tried to question him about the attempted theft of the capsule, and he and Carrington arranged for the alien astronauts to be removed from the capsule and taken to a secure location before anyone could see them. He then introduced the Doctor, Liz and the Brigadier to Carrington, who gave them a cover story about the astronauts having been infected with contagious and self-sustaining radiation and the coded message being a warning of this.

Things began to get out of Quinlan's control as first Carrington, who had his own xenophobic agenda, arranged for the aliens to be kidnapped by criminals in his pay, and then the Doctor deduced that the astronauts were alien and the real astronauts were still in space. The Doctor made plans with Space Centre head Professor Cornish to travel into space to search for the missing astronauts. Quinlan attempted to delay the flight, but eventually decided, above Carrington's objections, to tell the Doctor the truth. Before he could do so, Carrington had him killed by one of the radioactive aliens.
