~ Turner justifying to Anna of his relationship with Haley. |
James Turner is the main antagonist of the Law and Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Send In the Clowns". He is a high school music teacher who formed a relationship with his underage student and attempted to run away with her, unaware that she was actually his daughter.
He was portrayed by Erik Jensen, who also portrayed Martin Watts in Chicago P.D.
Biography[]
Despite being married, Turner had a one-night stand with Anna Sadler, who was also married. She felt ashamed of herself and cut off the brief affair, but, unbeknownst to him, she was pregnant with his child. After giving birth, Anna passed off their daughter, Haley, as her husband's child.
Seventeen years later, Turner, a failed musician, became a high school music teacher, and Haley was one of his students. He seduced Haley, and they would spend much time together such as fooling around his record studio behind his wife's back and Turner keeping provocative pictures of her to relive the memory. The two eventually decided to find a way to run away together without anyone ever finding them by faking Haley's death.
"Send In The Clowns"[]
While on a field trip to New York City, Turner and Haley put their plan into action, with Haley slipping away at a club with a man named Vincent Drago. Haley chooses Drago as a patsy because he looked like a criminal, as luck would have it, he did have a violent history of domestic abuse. Indeed, Drago came under suspicion while Turner secretly hid Haley in the house of one of his acquaintances in the city and the plan was to sneak out once all the attention died down.
On the day, Turner was to testify against Drago, he had disappeared and SVU detectives uncovered lewd songs and pictures that indicated a more intimate status with Haley than a mentor relationship. Soon they got directed to Turner's friend who told them that he was at his house.
Once there, the detectives found Haley and Turner sleeping in bed before waking them and arresting Turner, despite Haley pleading for them to understand they were in love. On the way to the precinct, Turner attempted to justify his relationship with Haley, stating that she completed him, and their love can overlook age. However, the detectives were disgusted and told him that he is in for it when he answers to the Sadlers.
At the precinct, Detective Fin Tutuola revealed to Lieutenant Olivia Benson that Turner confessed before they watched Anna reunite with Haley and slap Turner, while condemning him. The detectives held the gathered party back, as Turner voiced his love for Haley and Anna asked what seduction tactics, he used to get Haley. She furiously asked him how many seductions was enough, but he voiced how this was real. Chris then asked Anna what she was talking about before Anna reveals she and Turner had an affair 17 years earlier, stunning Chris and Haley but she frantically states it was a one-time thing. However, she tells Turner that what she has to say next is real before asking if he ever did the math from the time of the affair, as he slowly realizes what she is implying before Anna announces to all the affair conceived Haley, making Turner her biological father. She then condemns for sleeping with his own daughter. Suffering an emotional breakdown, he frantically told Chris that he didn't know but the latter got angry and tried to attack him but the police separate them, and Turner is taken away while calling out for Haley.
Meanwhile, Haley was shocked to learn that Turner was her father but was too taken by him that she only remarked that it explained why they were drawn together.
Assistant District Attorney Peter Stone later revealed Turner pleaded guilty to kidnapping, statutory rape, and incest. Stone also stated Turner was on suicide watch.
