Jamie Cleveland is a fictional character in the BBC Medical drama Casualty, and appears as the main antagonist of the 2024 miniseries Storm Damage.

He is portrayed by Ryan Hawley, who is also known for his role as Robert Sugden in Emmerdale.

Biography[]

Jamie Cleveland is introduced as a board member at Holby City Hospital in June 2024. He meets with clinical lead Siobhan McKenzie for a meeting regarding a higher than normal intake of patients due to a storm that has caused havoc around Holby. As a result of this meeting, Jamie offers to help out around the hospital, so the other staff can focus on the patients. Siobhan appreciates this. Jamie gets to work doing his odd jobs and catches the eye of some of the nurses, notably Jodie Whyte and Rida Amaan.

Jamie is revealed to be an acquaintance of timid nurse Cam Mickelthwaite. The pair met at a youth group, where Jamie mentored Cam and encouraged him to be more confident in himself. Cam is initially pleased to see Jamie, who offers Cam a place to stay after his house suffers significant damage as a result of the storm. Cam accepts and everything seems to be okay.

Things start to take a sinister turn when Cam, who is feeling guilty after a baby died after he hesitated before doing chest compressions, becomes more quiet than usual at work and begins isolating himself from his friends and colleagues. He also becomes increasingly more snappy whenever Jamie’s name is mentioned and falls even deeper into an emotional hole when a man named Bobby Morton, who went to the youth club with Cam, shows up at the hospital claiming that Jamie raped him when they were on a camping trip with the youth club. Cam meets Bobby in a pub to talk things through properly, but when Bobby gets into too much detail about what Jamie did to him, Cam snaps at him at tells Bobby to leave both him and Jamie alone.

Siobhan begins to notice Cam’s deteriorating mental state and decides to take action when Cam turns up to a work meeting drunk. She assumes his out of character behaviour has something to do with Jamie, and calls HR to make an enquiry about him. Jamie later confronts her about her questions to HR about him and threatens to have her struck off if she doesn’t leave the situation alone. She tells him she isn’t scared of him, a statement to which he replies that she should be.

Siobhan meets a drunk Cam in a pub, where he confides in her, admitting that he was put through the same sexual abuse from Jamie that Bobby was. Siobhan holds him as he breaks down in her arms.

A couple of weeks later, Siobhan tells Cam that Jamie is has gone missing. He is later revealed to have been in a severe car accident. When Jamie arrives at the hospital, Cam sits with him and Jamie tells him that Bobby ran him off the road. Cam then asks him if he’s sorry for what he did to him and Bobby. Jamie initially denies any wrongdoing, before backtracking and telling Cam that he only did what he did because Cam wanted him to. Cam then leaves in disgust.

Later that same day, Jamie loses his pulse and Cam once again goes into resus to watch as doctor Dylan Keogh pronounces Jamie’s time of death. Despite Jamie’s death, Cam still struggles to move on, as Jamie’s death meant that he never faced any proper justice for his abuse.
