Janet McCardle is the main antagonist of the Black Mirror episode "Loch Henry". She is the mother of Davis and wife of Kenneth. Originally presenting as a sweet and kind women, she is revealed to be a former serial killer, serial rapist and sadomasochist.

She is portrayed by Monica Dolan.

Personality

Janet McCardle is portrayed initially as a sweet, meek and soft spoken woman. She is shown to unabashedly spoil and love her son and her late husband, constantly keeping photos up around her house, and shows to be nice and lonely towards Pia, if a bit ignorant. However, it is revealed that Janet was a sadistic serial killer, who shared her husband’s love of murder and sadomasochism, showing to be laughing and joking in the snuff tapes.

Her nice and sweet exterior slips once Pia flees her, showing a completely unhinged woman, losing her cool and starting to curse and thrash around. It is left ambiguous how sweet Janet truly was after her retirement of a serial killer and torturer, however, she is shown to be remorseless and even nostalgic of her crimes, fondly holding photos of what she, her husband and Iain did, before she kill’s herself to not get caught. Despite this, she shows to still genuinely care for her son, even to the detriment of her secrete. She willingly helped Davis with his documentary on the killers and once she decides to commit suicide, she gives Davis all the documentaries and photos to boost his career all out of love for him.

Biography

Nothing is known on Janet’s life, except she had a husband Kenneth, who the two shared a mutual sadistic perversion, frequently having flings with Richard King, which are implied to have gotten violent. She and Kenny picked up Iain Adair and the three began kidnapping tourists, filming her and the two torturing, raping and murdering them while burying them in the backyard.

Kenneth and Janet had Davis, presumably continuing their crime spree until Kenneth murders and framed Iain Adair, and Kenneth slowly passed away from his injuries. Janet kept their crimes hidden, hiding the tapes over their favorite show and hiding pictures in a shoebox under her bed.

• There is various bits of foreshadowing which hint to Janet’s true nature. She was shown to have some pervertness, commenting on her favorite show’s lead actor having a good butt, and saying during her interview that she hasn’t been in front of a camera in years.
