- For the character from the live action remake, see Draco (Voltes V: Legacy).
Jangal Rui (ルイ・ジャンギャル) is a major antagonist of the anime series Voltes V. He is a three-horned general of the Boazanian Empire who is sent to Earth alongside Prince Heinel and Katherine Rii in Skullrook. He is fiercely loyal to Heinel and a wise strategist. Jangal and Katherine have protected Heinel from Emperor Zu Zambajil's numerous attempts to have him killed.
He was voiced by the late Shozo Izuka.
In Voltes V: Legacy, he was adapted into the character Draco, who was portrayed by Carlo Gonzales.
Appearance[]
Jangal has red skin, broad shoulders and a beard. He has a scar across his right eye. He has three red horns that protrude from his head. Jangal's arms are well-toned, and he is a bit fat. His uniform is purple with a yellow rip inside and he has a blue cape.
Personality[]
Jangal is a wise strategist who is fiercely loyal to Prince Heinel, having provided many sinister strategies for him to fight against the Voltes V. At the same time, he and Ri Katherine also try to prevent Emperor Zu Zambajil's plan to kill the prince. He genuinely respects the Voltes team and would even make a great ally for them had it not been because they're on the opposing sides. When being surrounded by the Voltes team, he commits suicide and reveals the truth about Professor Kentaro Goh to them and pledges loyalty to Heinel, dying a honorable death.
Biography[]
At the start of the series, Emperor Zu Zambajil sends his nephew, Prince Heinel, to lead an invasion against Earth with legions of fleets. In truth, he wants to send Heinel away to remove a perceived threat for his rule. Aiding Heinel are Rui Jangal, Ri Katherine and Zuhl. To ensure Heinel's death, Zu Zambajil sends Duke Zaki and Zuhl to pretend aiding Heinel, but in truth to kill him if necessary. During the invasion, Rui Jangal has helped Heinel to scheme against the Voltes V, but they fail every time.
Throughout the war, Jangal and Katherine know of Emperor Zu Zambajil's plan to have Heinel killed, so they try to prevent it at all cost. When Jangal and Katherine expose another plot to betray Heinel, Zuhl is executed.
When the Voltes team is trying to find the Goh brothers' father, Professor Kentaro Goh, on Heinel's ship, they confront Jangal. Being surrounded, Jangal takes his sword and stabs himself, committing suicide, as a Boazanian general would rather die honorably than live as a coward. Before his death, he reveals to Kenichi Goh that Goh is imprisoned on Boazania and pledges his loyalty to Heinel. His death devastates Heinel and Katherine.
Relationships[]
Prince Heinel[]
While Jangal is loyal to Heinel, he does disagree with him at times and question his decisions. However, Jangal never objects his orders yto his face and carries them out despite how he feels. He is loyal to Heinel despite Heinel once arresting and torturing him for failing to defeat Voltes V.
Jangal had no qualms when Heinel told him to torture Zuhl, but when Heinel ordered the execution of Giligan, he was horrified. His tactics in war, while initially violent, shift from those that are strategic, like using germs of a certain disease to discover if the Go brothers are Boazanian (since Boazanians are immune). While Heinel dislikes this, he allows Jangal to carry out his plans nonetheless. When Jangal dies, he praises Heinel, and Heinel says he will never forget his dedication and calls him an excellent warrior.
Katherine Rii[]
Katherine and Jangal respect each other as co-workers. Apart from Heinel, they are the only ones each other trust. They both are protective of Heinel, and when they suspect that he is in danger, they often work together off-screen to save him. They also tend to gossip with each other about the Boazanians from Emperor Zu Zambajil's court, sharing their displeasure of Do Bergan. Katherine is also one of the few people that Jangal tells his plans to, though when he informed her of his plan to spread a disease to the Go brothers and prove their Boazanian heritage, Katherine was shocked and told Heinel. However, Heinel did end up giving him permission. The two were close friends and when he died, Katherine shed tears.

Trivia[]
- For unknown reasons, Jangal resembles Satan. Unusually, he is the only red-skinned Boazanian seen in the entire show.
- However, he is radically different from Satan as he is loyal to his superior to the end.
- Jangal's name was changed in various dubs of Voltes V:
- In the English dub, he was known as Draco.
- In the Italian dub, he was known as Gael.
- Some translations (particularly those of Super Robot Wars) spell his name as Louis Jean-gall or Jangyal.
- His voice actor, Shozo Izuka, has a tendency to play evil bosses/minions. Apart from Jangal himself, he also voiced Hakaider from Android Kakaider and Temujin from Himitsu Sentai Goranger. Izuka was nicknamed "the man who plotted to conquer the earth for 50 years" for this very reason.
- His name may be a pun on Jingo, someone obsessed with warring.
