Jango (One Piece)

Jango (ジャンゴ Jango) is a supporting antagonist in the manga and anime series One Piece. He is the former right-hand of Captain Kuro in the Black Cat Pirates and a current member of the Marines, who works under Hina's command. He is also a recurring enemy of the Straw Hat Pirates.

He is voiced by Kazuki Yao and Wataru Takagi in Japanese, Pete Zarustica in the 4Kids dub, and Kenny Green in the Funimation dub.

Biography[]

Before becoming a pirate, Jango was a poor traveling dancer. One day, while he slept, a mushroom grew on his chin. After eating only the cap, finding the rest disgusting, he somehow gained powerful hypnotic abilities.

Jango eventually became the first mate of the Black Cat Pirates. When his captain, Kuro, decided to fake his own death and retire from piracy, he put Jango in charge. Jango helped carry out Kuro's plan by hypnotizing both a lookalike shipwright and a Marine officer into believing the imposter was the real Kuro, who was then publicly "executed." With Kuro's bounty erased, Jango became captain and was instructed to return with the crew to Syrup Village three years later so Kuro could steal the fortune of a rich girl named Kaya.

Following Kuro's orders, Jango planned to hypnotize Kaya into writing her will and then kill her. He led the crew's invasion of the village, but the plan was interrupted by the Straw Hat Pirates. Despite several attempts to complete the mission, Jango was eventually stopped by Usopp and Zoro. Knocked out and left behind, he woke up too late to rejoin the crew and was chased away by the Usopp Pirates.

Later, Jango ended up on another island, entered a dance contest in disguise, and won—celebrating with Marine officer Fullbody, who didn't recognize him. When pirates attacked, Jango at first fled but came back to help Fullbody save a woman. His identity was exposed, and he was sentenced to death. However, Fullbody's friendship helped him get acquitted.

Though Jango considered hypnotizing Fullbody to forget their bond, he changed his mind after seeing Marine officer Hina. Inspired by her, Jango and Fullbody both joined her Marine unit, switching sides out of admiration.

Trivia[]

He is heavily inspired by the late performer Michael Jackson, being his personality, way of dressing and way of dancing a parody of the latter.
