Jared: You really need to believe in what you're doing. If you wanna make it as an actor, you need to get tougher. Can't be getting over-emotional every time someone gives you a bit of direction.
Libby: I'm not. Aleena said that...
Jared: Aleena's a bimbo. Stop valuing her opinion over mine.
Libby: No, I'm not. I swear.
Jared: If you think Aleena's so great, why don't you put your false eyelashes back on and paint your face like a clown?
~ Jared Jones showing his true motives to Libby Guthie

Jared Jones is a fictional character and major antagonist of Waterloo Road, serving as the secondary antagonist in the second half of Series 14 and the main antagonist throughout Series 15 as well as a mentioned character during Series 16 altogether.

He was portrayed by Matthew Khan.

Development[]

Jared is both smart and athletic and is immediately popular with the girls in his year.

He also has hearing impairment, but this does not allow Jared to define him or stop him from what he wishes to do. Beneath his bravado, Jared feels insecure, and over time, this insecurity will begin to show.

History[]

Jared Jones is first introduced in the fifth episode of Series 14. In his first apperance, he seems to be friendly, caring and compassionate. Libby Guthrie takes an instant liking to him.

However in Series 15, Jared's relationship with Libby Guthie escalates into toxicity. As the series progresses, he takes advantage of Libby by gaslighting her, isolating her from her family and friends as well as being clingy to her.

In Episode 4, while helping to record Libby's short film for drama, he berates her for taking Aleena and Amy's advice over his, calling Aleena a "bimbo" and rudely suggesting Libby should put her fake eyelashes back on and paint her face like a clown while the camera is still rolling. When Libby shows the video to Amy, she becomes more suspicious of Jared's treatment.

In Episode 5, on Libby's birthday, he is confronted by his ex-girlfriend named Chanelle, who trespasses onto the premieses to reveal his true nature to Libby. Despite being ordered to leave, she refuses to let him get off scot-free and punches him in the face. This incident causes Amy Spratt, who has been investigating Jared's behaviour, to be terminated by Dame Stella Drake.

In episode 6, he delusionally claims how much he loves her by tugging on her hair. Later, he convinces her to live with him in his dad's caravan to which she complys.

In episode 7, when her father, Neil Guthrie, seperates them so Libby can get her grades back up, making Jared attend the school trip on his own. However, this does not stop him. He distracts Neil by making him talk to a former pupil named Caz Williams, then sneaks out of the building to find Libby at the chip shop with her sister, Cat. As Libby and Jared are walking back to school, he delibrately walks onto the street to make Libby feel gulity for wanting space away from him. At the end of the episode, Libby borrows Cat's phone after Jared smashed hers looking at her texts claiming that Coral Walker has given birth to her newborn brother. Jared spots this and tackles her to the floor, leaving a cut on her eyebrow. Libby pretends to get a drink for both her and Jared, only to take his keys and lock him in the caravan, running off barefoot home.

In the final episode of Series 15, they have a disciplinary meeting about Jared's actions towards Libby. Though there is no evidence of his domestic abuse, he is allowed to return to school, however he is not allowed to be anywhere near Libby. Thinking they are on her break, he pressures her with a neckless ansd numerous texts. This time, Libby does not fall for his deceits and instantly blocks him from her contact list. This riles Jared as he storms out of his class and uses the fire alarm as a distraction for him to be alone with Libby in the school library. Libby tries to convince Jared they are no longer together, but Jared remains defiant, desperate to rekindle his toxic relationship and regain control of her. She tries to threaten to use her personal attack alarm against him, only for him to yank it out of her grasp. He pins her to the wall, silencing her screams for help, but she bites his hand making him smash a glass window in anger. Jared beats up Libby unconscious, blacking her eye where she is then taken to the hospital, unaware the entire assault has been audio-recorded on her phone. Moments later, he returns to the school grounds to be confronted by and angry mob of disgusted students. When his attack on Libby and coercive control is revealed, he feebly tries to save face, claiming the recording to be a deep-fake. When this fails, he tries to run, only to be stopped by Sergeant Rutherford and Dame Stella. He is last seen taken away by the police, arrested and excluded for domestic abuse and unauthorised usage of a fire alarm. Libby is eventually free from her ex-boyfriend's oppression thus the latter is never seen again.

Personality[]

Jared Jones seems a gentleman-like person who cares about Libby Guthrie from the bottom of his heart, but secretly it is all a façade. In Series 15, it is revealed that he is none other than a misogynistic domestic abuser who does not take no for an answer and harms his girlfriends who attempt to stand up to him. He is deceptive, manipulative, selfish and takes no genuine responsibility for his crimes. Jared is very possessive of Libby, feigning sympathy and remorse whenever he hurts her both mentally and psychically.
