Jason Barnes is the main antagonist of the made-for-TV film Without Her Consent. Barnes is a serial acquaintance rapist, later imprisoned by the efforts of survivor Emily Briggs.
He's portrayed by Scott Valentine.
Biography[]
Barnes, a movie set decorator, had a history of raping women he met and obsessed over, stalking them afterwards to terrorize them away from testifying against him in court. Five women before the film were victims of Barnes, and when Emily Briggs moves into his neighborhood, Barnes rapes Emily next with the lie she can come get a table from his house for hers. The D.A. refuses to prosecute, but it takes Emily meeting Marcia Daily, who was also raped by Barnes, to take the case fully to criminal court. Beforehand, her boyfriend Trey Cousins insults Emily for being a victim, then hits and nearly kills Barnes with his car. At Marcia's advice, Emily turns to women's rights lawyer Gloria Allred, and Allred publicizes Emily's account of the rape to influence Trey's sentence. He's sentenced to probation, as well as paying for Barnes' medical bills. Emily makes a decision to leave Trey, around the same time Claire Sugarman comes forward to report Barnes for rape as well. Barnes tries to lie his way out of his original perjury that was meant to bury the rape, but Trey violates his restraining order to neighbor Pete Raymond to testify in court to seeing Emily after the rape. Barnes confesses completely in open court as a consequence of his spite. He gets ten years imprisonment and pays $5 million to Emily in damages, Emily mending her relationship with Trey.
